Rangers to appoint Ange Postecoglou-like manager as ‘realistic’ candidate emerges

Patrick Stewart may be dying to appoint someone like Ange Postecoglou at Rangers amid concerns over Russell Martin’s future.

Stewart told the Ibrox faithful in the recent fan meeting that the Gers want a manager capable of playing modern, progressive football in G51, a box the current Nottingham Forest boss undoubtedly ticks.

While Andrew Cavenagh is backing Martin for now, he may have to reckon with the supporters’ fury when Hibernian face the Light Blues in the Premier Sports Cup on 20 September.

With speculation swirling around the former Southampton boss’ future at the Glaswegian outfit, it’s only normal for different head coaches to be linked with the job.

Kevin Muscat perfect replacement for Russell Martin at Rangers

Kevin Muscat “ticks so many boxes” to be the next Gers manager, Gavin Berry says.

The Daily Record journalist compared the Gers’ domestic treble-winner to Postecoglou, with whom he worked in Australia and Japan.

Berry feels the Nottingham Forest boss’ style of play has a proven track record in the William Hill Premiership, making the ex-defender the prime candidate at Ibrox.

Speaking on Game On on 19 September, the journalist said: “If we want to be realistic, for me it would probably come back to Muscat. He’s been continually linked with the job. He missed out to Philippe Clement, and he ticks so many boxes. I know he played at Rangers, that’s not even the biggest factor. He wasn’t there for that long. Was part of a treble-winning squad.

“I just think the style that he plays, similar to Postecoglou, obviously worked under him. We know it works in the Premiership. I think he’s someone who could take a squad and get the most out of it.”

Rangers-linked Kevin Muscat

Russell Martin potential successor: Who is Kevin Muscat?

Phillipe Clement beat Muscat to get the job at Ibrox, and fans can only wonder how different things could’ve been in G51.

The Belgian manager won the Scottish League Cup at the Gers, but his tenure ultimately failed.

Barry Ferguson subsequently took charge of the Light Blues on an interim basis, but they would’ve arguably been better off making a long-term appointment back then.

Muscat’s record currently managing Shanghai Port

Muscat was linked to be Clement’s successor at Rangers, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see his name being mentioned with the hotseat at Ibrox in the coming weeks.

The Australian manager has had successful stints with Melbourne Victory, Yokohama F Marinos and Shanghai Port, winning multiple titles.

While some would argue Muscat hasn’t managed at the highest level in Europe, Postecoglou had a similar career trajectory before succeeding at Celtic.

It remains to be seen what the future holds in G51.
