Rangers fans should direct anger at Patrick Stewart after meeting this week

Rangers’ Fan Advisory Board met with CEO Patrick Stewart, but a lot of fans won’t be happy after reading the minutes.

It was clear that the appointment and performance of Russell Martin would be discussed heavily in this meeting.

Martin was appointed by the new Rangers hierarchy this summer, but the team’s domestic form has been appalling.

Sadly for those who want Martin to be sacked by Rangers, it doesn’t look like Stewart is in much of a rush to get rid of his first-team manager.

Patrick Stewart outlines reluctance to sack Russell Martin

The minutes of the meeting were published on Friday, and several important issues surrounding Rangers were discussed.

However, the main issue that Rangers fans care about right now is the board’s stance on Martin.

Most of them seemingly want him out of the club already, but they’re going to be unhappy with Stewart’s views on the issue.

According to Rangers Review, the minutes read: “[Patrick Stewart] noted that while the head coach carries responsibility for results, accountability also lies with the wider football operation and the board.

“He emphasised that decisions must be taken without emotion, with the aim of addressing the underlying causes of underperformance.

“[Stewart] stressed that applying binary triggers to managerial decisions was unwise, as context is everything. He emphasised that while results were disappointing, the club felt that it was important to avoid making a reactive change.

“He reiterated the desire to avoid short-term, reactive cycles of change, pointing out that Rangers have gone through multiple coaches in recent years without resolving the underlying issues.”

Rangers fans need to direct anger to the board as well as Russell Martin

It’s understandable that football managers need to be given time to make an impact at a new club, but sometimes it’s clear from the offset that things aren’t working.

Those at the top of the Rangers hierarchy are supposedly good businessmen, but to succeed in business you need to be proactive.

By keeping Martin in charge for much longer, they’ll be sleepwalking with the club into obscurity. As well as sporting consequences, there could be major financial consequences if they’re not careful.

Rangers are already playing in the Europa League instead of the Champions League after Martin guided his team to a 9-1 aggregate defeat to Club Brugge.

They’re tenth in the league with four points from five games. If their domestic form continues like this, they may not be in Europe at all next season.

Rangers fans must keep pressuring the board to make a change in the dugout. It’s in the best interests of everyone at the club.
