Rangers bite the bullet as ‘madness’ Oscar Cortes transfer claim refuted
Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises haven’t made the best of impressions since their Rangers takeover.
Kevin Thelwell’s position may be scrutinised at Ibrox once everything is said and done in G51 over the coming days as the Gers sit 10th in the William Hill Premiership despite spending a significant sum.
The Light Blues made 13 signings this summer, excluding Oscar Cortes, whose 2024 summer loan move was made permanent, with an obligation to buy in his deal with RC Lens.
Ally McCoist branded Cortes’ loan move to Sporting Gijon before the 11pm deadline on 1 September as “utter madness” after the Glaswegian outfit had to pay £4.5million for him, but it may have been necessary.

This story includes exclusive comments from Gers icon Derek Ferguson.
Oscar Cortes needed Rangers transfer as 49ers Enterprises to fix disjointed recruitment
Derek Ferguson has backed the 49ers to slowly fix the Gers’ “disjointed” transfer strategy in G51.
Reacting to Cortes’ loan move last summer, the Light Blues icon feels his temporary move to Spain was the right thing for both parties at Ibrox.
The 21-year-old Colombian winger first moved on loan to the Glaswegian outfit in February 2024, but in the previous campaign, injuries hampered his game time.
Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, Ferguson said: “It’s been disjointed for a number of years now. Given a bit of time, the 49ers will start to get their work done in a proper way.
“You feel for Cortes, who’s struggled for minutes through injury, and it’s clear he needs to be somewhere where he’ll play. I think it’s better for everyone that he goes out and plays.”

Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises must make changes soon
Cavenagh risks facing the heat from the Ibrox faithful if he continues to keep faith with Russell Martin despite the abysmal start to the season.
The Gers have gotten off to their worst start in the league since 1978, and were brutally knocked out of the Champions League by Club Brugge in the play-off.
It doesn’t look like the former Southampton boss has the ability to turn things around at the Glaswegian outfit, and fans certainly don’t want to give him any more time.
- Martin has a 25 per cent win rate at the Gers.
- The Light Blues have won just three games this season.
- The Scottish manager could have the shortest tenure of any permanent head coach at the Glaswegian outfit if sacked before December.
Martin’s sack at Rangers seems inevitable, with fans wanting to see the back of the Scottish manager just 12 games into the campaign.
It wouldn’t be surprising to see the new American owners realise their mistake sooner rather than later and make a change in the dugout.
The Gers face Hibernian in the Premier Sports Cup on 20 September, and it could potentially be the last time the Scottish manager takes charge at Ibrox.
