Kevin Thelwell fooling no one after what he’s just told Rangers fans about Youssef Chermiti
Kevin Thelwell didn’t do himself any favours by signing Youssef Chermiti at Rangers in the previous transfer window.
The Gers’ new sporting director decided it would make sense to spend a significant sum on a player who didn’t have a single goal contribution at Everton in his two years at Goodison Park.
Thelwell has undoubtedly put his reputation on the line for Chermiti after deciding to make him the most expensive addition to the Light Blues’ squad in 25 years.
Bojan Miovski also made his way to Ibrox as the Glaswegian outfit looked to replace Hamza Igamane and Cyriel Dessers, and the sporting director has tried to justify his recruitment strategy in G51.

Youssef Chermiti expected to generate profit at Rangers
Thelwell expects Chermiti’s signing to be high risk, high reward at the Gers.
The Light Blues’ sporting director has suggested that the Portugal Under-21 international can massively contribute on the pitch and hopefully generate decent profit for at Ibrox down the line.
As for Miovski, the North Macedonia international’s previous stint in the William Hill Premiership with Aberdeen seemingly made him an ideal addition at the Glaswegian outfit.
- Thelwell signed Chermiti at Everton for £11.5m in 2023 from Sporting CP.
- The striker had several fitness issues at the Toffees.
- Last season, the centre-forward made four Premier League appearances.
In the minutes of the meetings with Thelwell and Patrick Stewart shared by the fan advisory board on X on 19 September, it states: “They outlined the rationale behind some recent signings. For example, Miovski was seen as a sensible acquisition given his prior success, age profile, and leadership qualities, while Chermiti represented a higher risk-reward signing with the potential to deliver both on the pitch and in future transfer value.”
While the rationale behind the 26-year-old striker from Girona makes perfect sense, the Ibrox chief’s big push for Chermiti feels baffling considering his record in recent seasons.
The Bears could have arguably spent almost half of the £10million, including add-ons, on a proven talent like Vaclav Cerny last summer.

Russell Martin may not have wanted Youssef Chermiti at Ibrox
Russell Martin is claimed to have had a head-to-head clash over Chermiti’s transfer as he didn’t want the 21-year-old centre-forward.
Rangers fans don’t agree with the Scottish manager on much, but they undoubtedly feel the club went overboard to get the Portuguese youngster.
The striker has little time to settle at the Gers, and given the money spent on him, an immediate impact is expected.
Given Chermiti’s record since joining Everton, it’s understandable that supporters in G51 lack confidence in him, and the prospect of making a profit seems foolish.
