Russell Martin in head-to-head clash with Ibrox figures, Rangers fans may take his side

Russell Martin may not have been best pleased with Kevin Thelwell at Rangers in the previous transfer window.

With a net spend of approximately £20million last summer, the Gers signed 12 new players, excluding Lyall Cameron, who arrived after a pre-contract agreement.

The Ibrox faithful want to see Martin gone after a poor start to the season, as the Scottish manager has found it hard to get the best out of the squad.

Apart from the former Southampton boss, Andrew Cavenagh should also scrutinise Thelwell for the transfer business at the Glaswegian outfit that has arguably underwhelmed.

Youssef Chermiti transfer at Rangers not wanted by Russell Martin

Martin could potentially have had a heated discussion over the signing of Yossef Chermiti at the Gers, Paul Slane says.

The former Celtic midfielder has claimed that the Scottish manager didn’t want the 21-year-old striker at Ibrox and may have had a confrontation with some members of the hierarchy.

While supporters don’t seem to care for the former Southampton boss, they’ll undoubtedly side with him regarding the Portugal Under-21 international’s signing for £10million, including add-ons.

Speaking on Open Goal on 18 September, Slane says: “Martin didn’t want [Chermiti]. I’ve heard that Martin had a head-to-head clash on that signing he didn’t want.”

Kevin Thelwell has taken gamble with Youssef Chermiti singing at Ibrox

Thelwell has arguably put his reputation on the line for Chermiti, who didn’t have a goal contribution in his two years at Goodison Park.

The Gers’ new sporting director signed the 21-year-old during his time at Everton, and he decided to reunite with the centre-forward last summer.

The Gers spent a significant sum on the former Everton striker as they looked to reinforce their attack after Hamza Igamane and Cyriel Dessers’ exit.

Rangers fans will surely be worried about Chermiti, as David Moyes was open to letting the youngster leave despite only having Thierno Barry and Beto as his other number nine options.

The young striker missed most of last season due to two separate injuries and played just 42 minutes of Premier League action.

With Chermiti’s stint against Hearts on 13 September making it clear that he isn’t 100 per cent match fit, the Glaswegian outfit would’ve certainly been better off spending the money on someone else.
