Rangers to sack Kevin Thelwell for Steven Gerrard return at Ibrox
Kevin Thelwell could potentially have a massive say in whether Rangers will appoint Steven Gerrard to replace Russell Martin.
The Gers have gotten off to a disastrous start this season, sitting 10th in the William Hill Premiership and getting humiliated in the Champions League by Club Brugge.
Martin’s sacking feels inevitable at Ibrox, as supporters want to see a change in the dugout after losing 2-0 to Hearts in the league on 13 September.
Andrew Cavenagh has been offered a phone call with Gerrard as the Glaswegian outfit find themselves in a tough spot, but the Liverpool icon’s return to G51 may not be realistic.

Kevin Thelwell to block Steven Gerrard appointment at Rangers
Thelwell may not want a strong figure like Gerrard at the Gers, Keith Jackson says.
The Daily Record journalist feels the Light Blues’ sporting director possibly wants to have the final say over the recruitment strategy at Ibrox, and the former England international could potentially hinder that.
Jackson believes that for the Liverpool icon to be appointed at the Glaswegian outfit, Thelwell surely has to go.
Speaking on Hotline Live on 18 September, the journalist says: “I’ll throw a spanner on that Gerrad works. I’m not sure Thelwell would want a character of the size of Gerrard going into that position. I think that Thelwell is looking for somebody he has authority over.
“I think he’s the guy who wants to make the decisions in the transfer market in terms of recruitment. I’m just not sure that would be a fit. I think in order for a Gerrard to go back in there, I’m not sure Thelwell would be there as a sporting director. Certainly, I don’t think he would approve it.”

Russell Martin alternative replacements at Ibrox
Jose Mourinho was being heavily linked with the Ibrox hotseat, but Benfica have appointed the legendary Portuguese head coach.
Gerrard seems like the ideal person to steady the ship at the Gers, given his previous stint in G51, where he won the league title.
However, some supporters at the Glaswegian outfit weren’t pleased with the manner of the Liverpool icon’s exit to Aston Villa, leading to uncertainty about his return.
- Martin has won three of his 12 matches in charge at the Gers.
 - The Light Blues have conceded 19 goals under the Scottish manager.
 - The ex-Saints boss has led the Glaswegian outfit to their worst league start in 47 years.

Rangers looked heavily interested in appointing Davide Ancelotti last summer, but the Italian head coach is under extreme pressure at Botafogo and could leave.
Mark van Bommel also confirmed he held talks at Ibrox before Martin was eventually chosen, and it remains to be seen whether the former Bayern Munich and Barcelona star’s name will be revisited anytime soon.
Whatever decision Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises take, the next person to lead the Gers must succeed.
