Rangers ‘absolutely mental’ with official stance on Russell Martin replacement

Russell Martin looks on the brink of getting sacked as Rangers face Hibernian on Saturday.

The Gers have won just three of their first 12 matches under the Scottish manager, and David Gray’s team travel to Ibrox next on 20 September in the quarter-final of the Premier Sports Cup.

There have been reports that Andrew Cavenagh and Co. have received proposals from managers to replace Martin, as fans want to see a change in the dugout.

The Glaswegian outfit are backing the former Southampton boss for now, but sooner or later, his position in G51 will surely become untenable.

Rangers should be talking to potential Russell Martin replacements

It’s baffling to see the Gers not hold discussions with managers who can possibly succeed Martin, Keith Jackson says.

The Daily Record journalist can’t believe the Light Blues aren’t getting involved in conversations with potential replacements for the former Southampton boss at Ibrox, despite several head coaches expressing their interest in the job.

With the possibility of the Scottish manager getting the boot with a loss to Hibs arguably high, the Glaswegian outfit should already have a contingency in place.

Speaking on Hotline Live on 18 September, Jackson said: “Rangers confirming that they have a number of managers who have made contact, sent in CV’s, got their agents to approach them in terms of putting their hands up to replace Martin.

“But the official party line from Rangers is that they haven’t initiated and aren’t seeking to get involved in discussions with these guys. Is it just me, or is that absolutely mental given that they may be looking for a new manager by Saturday evening? Why would you not want to talk? Why aren’t you engaging in these discussions?”

Patrick Stewart also under pressure at Ibrox

The Ibrox faithful also want to see Patrick Stewart gone, as things have undoubtedly gotten worse since he was appointed chief executive officer.

With the Gers’ CEO surely playing a role in appointing Martin at Ibrox, questions must be asked of the decision-makers in G51.

While the ex-Saints boss rightly deserves the major share of the blame for the current issues at the Glaswegian outfit, other members of the hierarchy must also give answers.

Martin’s record as Gers manager

Rangers must also look at Kevin Thelwell’s record so far and scrutinise some of his recruitment decisions at the club last summer.

The supporters have every right to be angry with every member of the Gers’ hierarchy, as they were promised better times in G51.

With a disastrous start to the season at Ibrox, it remains to be seen how Martin’s situation will unfold.
