Russell Martin told to be brave after what former Ibrox figure has seen him publicly do

Russell Martin’s future continues to look bleak at Rangers.

Martin is under severe scrutiny from the fans ahead of their Premier Sports Cup quarter-final clash against Hibernian this weekend.

Rangers supporters are planning a protest against Martin and Patrick Stewart, with many seats expected to be empty at Ibrox.

If Rangers lose, Martin will have to face the media once more, something he has struggled with throughout his Rangers reign.

Russell Martin not used to the pressure of being Rangers manager

In an article for the Daily Record, former Rangers full-back Alan Hutton has explained what Martin must do to turn things around at the club.

Hutton pointed out that Martin would never have experienced the level of scrutiny he is currently facing as Ibrox boss, with a brave face required after the way he has seen him act at public press conferences.

He said: “I mean it as no disrespect to any of the other clubs he’s managed at, but I don’t think he’ll ever have been at a place where every single move and decision is as scrutinised as it is up here.

“I think he has to be brave at this moment in time. I’m looking at his press conferences after games, and he speaks well, but he just looks a bit like the weight of the world is on his shoulders.”

Martin has never managed a team with ambitions in Europe, and it’s clear that he is struggling with the pressure to meet expectations.

The transfer strategy was to bring in young, hungry players, yet most of the new signings have underwhelmed in a Rangers shirt so far.

“The overhaul in the squad has been dramatic; he’s brought in some very young players, which can put you at a bit of a disadvantage at times,” Hutton said.

With Jack Butland and James Tavernier the only players in the Rangers squad aged over 30, Martin needs leaders to emerge in the dressing room.

Andrew Cavenagh has huge decision on his hands

Cavenagh stepped into the role as Rangers chairman in May, and he could have hardly expected a more tumultuous start.

Cavenagh is set to attend the match against Hibernian, with fans starting to direct their anger towards him.

Much to the fury of fans, Cavenagh continues to publicly back Martin, and toxicity will spread across G51 if Rangers lose and Martin isn’t sacked.

Less than four months into his role as chairman, Cavenagh is facing a decision that could make or break his Rangers legacy.
