Russell Martin sack latest at Rangers: What we know so far as another statement made
Russell Martin is seemingly on the verge of being sacked at Rangers following their terrible start to the season.
Martin is under severe pressure, as Rangers sit 10th in the Scottish Premiership having failed to win any of their first five games.
Whilst Andrew Cavenagh looks set to back Martin, rumours are constantly circling on when Martin will be sacked.
Ibrox News rounds up all the latest news in the last 24 hours regarding Martin’s future.

Andrew Cavenagh set to attend Hibs match as Russell Martin faces last chance
Rangers play Hibs in the Premier Sports Cup quarter-final at Ibrox on Saturday, with Cavenagh set to attend.
The chairman will finally get to witness the fury of Rangers fans towards Russell Martin, and a loss against Hibs could change his view on Martin’s future.
Cavenagh is starting to face criticism for not relieving Martin of his duties, as fan anger grows in G51.
Having become the chairman in May, he is already becoming deeply unpopular amongst supporters, and several managers have declared interest in taking over at Rangers.

Several top coaches keen on Ibrox job
The Daily Record report that the Rangers board have been approached by several managers that are keen on the job.
- Barry Ferguson could make a return to Ibrox
- Sean Dyche is currently unemployed and has previous history with Kevin Thelwell at Everton
- Under-fire Botafogo manager Davide Ancelotti was linked with the job before Russell Martin’s appointment
Whilst these are some of the more likely candidates to replace Martin, the board continues to reiterate that the former Southampton manager has their full backing.
Russell Martin likened to Ruben Amorim as pressure intensifies
Martin’s lack of tactical flexibility has led to comparisons with fellow under-fire Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim.
Martin’s possession-based football philosophy is certainly not getting the best out of a Rangers squad that has been heavily reinforced over the summer.
Heart & Hand Podcast wrote on X on 17 September: “Martin, Amorim, Potter, anyone – as soon as you get to the ‘he has one or two games to save his job’ stage, it’s already too late. All boards are doing is delaying the inevitable. It just looks weak.”
Games managed | 12 |
Wins | 3 |
Draws | 5 |
Losses | 4 |
Win percentage | 25 |
A win percentage of 25 per cent is not good enough for any manager at any club, and with the standards rightfully so high at Rangers, it’s no wonder that Martin is the most unpopular man in Glasgow right now.

Rangers Fan Advisory Board make statement regarding Russell Martin
The Rangers FAB have said that they had a discussion with Thelwell and Patrick Stewart regarding Martin’s future at the club on 17 September.
The statement read: “We reiterated the fans’ collective strength of feeling on the performance of the manager, as well as other issues relating to the men’s first team that continue to cause great concern to the Rangers support.
“Nothing was left off the table. We appreciate the club dedicating the full agenda to football matters and answering questions raised.
“Other items, on wider club issues, will be addressed at a separate meeting in the near future. The club continues to back the manager – a stance we forcibly challenged.”
With the match against Hibs a must-win for Martin, a loss would surely result in him being sacked after just 14 matches.
