Rangers vs Hibernian postponement latest as Met Office issues Glasgow weather warning

Rangers take on Hibernian in the Premier Sports Cup quarter-final on Saturday, with a toxic atmosphere already anticipated.

The Union Bears have organised a protest against Russell Martin and Patrick Stewart before the game, and fans will gather outside the main entrance at Ibrox to fight back.

Martin likely needs to beat Hibernian to save his job, but a win may not be enough, as Andrew Cavenagh could sack him if convinced by the empty seats and protests.

Rangers will face a tough test in Hibernian, and this is set to be made more difficult by the conditions on the day, with a weather warning now issued.

Glasgow weather warning issued ahead of Rangers vs Hibernian

Martin took the Rangers squad swimming in Loch Lomond after losing to Hearts, but his players could get soaked again as they take on Hibs in some testing conditions.

The Met Office has issued a weather warning for the Glasgow area, with heavy rainfall and potential flooding set to cause issues.

However, with the warning set at yellow, the disruptive weather is of a low risk and likelihood as things stand.

This means that there should be very few fears that the conditions will lead to the match being postponed or delayed, but fans in attendance for the game or the protest may wish to dress accordingly for potential heavy rain.

Rainfall could disadvantage Russell Martin’s style of play

If there is heavy rain during the game, the ball may skid, while also making passing on the ground a lot more difficult.

With this in mind, more shooting and less short passing would be suitable for these conditions, and this is the antithesis of Martin’s attempted style of play, which has led to heavy criticism.

Hibs have fired in 71 shots compared to Rangers’ 66 this season, and more long-range shooting could be of benefit in such conditions, with the movement of the ball becoming more unpredictable.

This means that Hibs could adapt to the weather better than Rangers could.

Rangers have struggled going forward under Martin, and Saturday could be a truly gruesome day all around for the manager, given the weather, the protests and the difficult game which lies ahead.
