Rangers fans ‘will be astonished’ at latest Russell Martin update as managers reach out

Rangers have had a dismal start to the season under Russell Martin, whose job is seemingly hanging by a thread.

Martin faces calls to be sacked at Rangers by disgruntled fans who have had enough of the uninspiring possession-based style of play.

Rangers’ 2-0 loss to Hearts at Ibrox has left them 10th in the Scottish Premiership, and winless from their first five games.

Andrew Cavenagh continues to back Martin despite dissatisfaction from fans, yet managers have been in touch with Rangers about replacing the Englishman.

Rangers refuse to hear other managers out

Speaking on the Daily Record Hotline Live on 17 September, journalist Keith Jackson made it clear that managers had approached Rangers with their CVs.

However, the Gers’ stance is that they are not actively seeking talks with any managers.

He said: “The club reached out and wants it known that despite reviewing a number of CVs and a number of contacts from agents representing managers, Rangers are neither seeking these conversations nor indulging in them.

“It adds to the position of peril that Martin is in, and if they get knocked out of the cup by Hibs, are we seriously to believe that Martin survives that?

“A lot of Rangers fans will be astonished to hear that they’re not having exploratory talks with managers.”

Fellow journalist Scott McDermott replied: “The fans will be devastated to hear that, given the strength of feeling towards Martin.”

Martin’s managerial record at the club is abysmal in comparison to previous Rangers, albeit he has managed fewer games than his predecessors.

Whilst Rangers clearly deny that they are looking for a replacement, reports have linked a number of managers to the job.

Botafogo manager Davide Ancelotti looks unlikely to join Rangers, yet one manager has stood out as a good solution for Rangers right now.

Sean Dyche would do well at Rangers

Kris Boyd expressed a desire to see Dyche in charge of Rangers, with the 54-year-old currently unemployed.

Dyche is best known for his tenure at Burnley, where he managed to secure promotion to the Premier League twice, before enjoying multiple successful seasons in the top flight with the club.

Dyche is renowned for his defensive pragmatism, something that is the polar opposite of what Martin is now known for.

Rangers are leaking goals at a consistent rate, as Martin’s high line was consistently breached by Hearts on Saturday.

Dyche guided Burnley to a seventh-placed finish in the English Premier League in 2017/18, and despite an unsuccessful spell at Everton in recent years, he could be exactly what Rangers need at this moment in time.
