Alan Hutton shares worrying verdict for Rangers vs Hibernian after what he just saw at Ibrox

Rangers take on Hibernian in the Premier Sports Cup at Ibrox on Saturday, but it will be far from an easy game for the home side.

Andrew Cavenagh has flown into Glasgow to attend the game as Russell Martin faces calls for the sack.

Rangers were beaten at home by an in-form Hearts last time out, and Hibernian will aim to do the same as Martin’s side continues to struggle.

Former Rangers star Alan Hutton is now worried about their chances in the cup, which could end up being their best shot at silverware this season.

Alan Hutton fearful of Hibernian win at Rangers

Hibs have won away at Ibrox just twice since 2018, but will be fancying their chances as they aim to stick the boot into Martin.

Rangers have a woeful home record in 2025, stemming back to Philippe Clement and Barry Ferguson’s reigns, and the fear factor of playing away at Ibrox has now gone, according to Hutton.

Martin’s record at Rangers

“I was watching the Hearts game last weekend, and nobody wanted the ball. I’ve watched a number of Hibs games this season. They’re good and will be up for it on Saturday,” Hutton told the Daily Record.

“The fear factor of Rangers isn’t there anymore. So when teams turn up, they feel we can get something.

“I do feel for Russell. He looks like a man who’s just been beaten up. The weight of the world is on his shoulders.”

Rangers cannot afford to lose to Hibernian

Losing to Hibernian would surely mean Martin is sacked, with his position arguably already untenable given the fan sentiment towards him.

While this would be a silver lining for a lot of Rangers fans, they simply cannot afford to throw away another shot at a trophy, especially given that this may be their only one.

Rangers are out of the title race, and the likelihood of a miracle Europa League run looks very slim. If they are to lift silverware, they will need Martin to at least win this one game, regardless of his future.

With the Ibrox crowd making a toxic environment for Martin, it has become more difficult for Rangers to win in front of their fans, and this has encouraged other teams to believe that they can secure victories when they would have otherwise been intimidated in previous years.
