Rangers to miss out on Jose Mourinho chance of lifetime after Russell Martin sack latest

Rangers are enduring their worst start to a season since 1978.

Russell Martin is facing calls to be sacked already after a disastrous start to the new season at Ibrox.

Rangers’ home loss to Hearts on Saturday saw ugly scenes in the Ibrox stands as fans roundly booed the team during the 2-0 defeat.

Andrew Cavenagh is said to be sticking by Martin and giving him a chance to turn things around, after only appointing him in the summer.

This decision has not been welcomed by fans, and news on Wednesday surrounding Jose Mourinho may prove that this was a mistake.

Jose Mourinho ‘in advanced talks’ with European giants

Mourinho has been linked to the Rangers in recent weeks as pressure around Martin’s position grows.

The Portuguese icon is currently without a job after leaving Fenerbahce early this season.

Fabrizio Romano is now reporting that Mourinho is close to being appointed manager of Benfica.

The Special One is said to be open to a Benfica move, with the agreement close to being completed.

Benfica sacked Bruno Lage after being beaten at home by Qarabag in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

The 62-year-old is keen to return to management, and it looks like Rangers will no longer have the chance to bring him to Ibrox in the near future.

Rangers missing out on Jose Mourinho would be a disaster

Cavenagh and the 49ers made the controversial decision to back Martin, and it may come back to bite them.

Mourinho has previously waxed lyrical about Rangers, and would have been a blockbuster appointment for the Ibrox club and Scotland.

The former Chelsea and Real Madrid manager would have brought experience and a winning mentality that has been missing from Ibrox for a while.

Cavenagh will come under criticism for delaying the sacking of Martin and allowing a manager like Mourinho to be snapped up.

It is another own goal for the ownership, who appointed Martin in the first place and haven’t been able to admit their mistake even after the disastrous start to the season.

Rangers may never get an opportunity to appoint someone like Mourinho again, and fans will feel this is a real chance missed.
