‘Rangers must phone Hearts now and pay Derek McInnes compensation’ in new manager latest

Rangers’ 2-0 defeat to Hearts on Saturday means they have suffered their worst start to a domestic season in 47 years.

Russell Martin could soon be on the verge of being sacked, with fans furious that he hasn’t already been relieved of his duties.

Martin has retained the backing of Andrew Cavenagh for now, yet the loss to Hearts at Ibrox has sent fans wild.

Hearts manager Derek McInnes was linked with the Rangers job following the sacking of Philippe Clement, but instead, they opted to appoint Barry Ferguson for the rest of last season.

Ryan Stevenson believes Rangers should have gone for McInnes in February

In an article for the Daily Record, former Hearts striker Stevenson spoke about how Rangers still need someone like McInnes to turn their form around.

He said: “As a Hearts fan, I’m just so grateful that we’ve got McInnes on our side. Let’s be honest, Rangers should never have allowed that to happen.

“Even now, if they had the balls, they’d pay their own manager off and get on the phone to Tynecastle asking for the size of the compensation package. But they won’t.

“They should have made that move when Philippe Clement was being binned last season.

“People might laugh, but if McInnes did take that job, the first thing he would do is get back to suits and brown brogues. He’d drag the whole club straight back to what he remembered as a player, and they’d be all the better for it.”

McInnes’ style of play hugely differs from Martin’s, with the Hearts manager’s direct, counter-attacking style carving open the Rangers defence on Saturday.

McInnes has had an interesting managerial career, having never managed at a so-called big club despite all the praise he gets.

McInnes has won eight of his first 10 matches in charge of Hearts, in contrast to Martin’s 25 per cent win percentage at Rangers.

It’s clear that Martin’s time at Rangers is nearly up, and Stevenson has said that Rangers would be smart to enquire over the possibility of bringing McInnes to the club.

However, former Celtic player Simon Ferry believes Marcelo Bielsa would be a good fit for Rangers.

Marcelo Bielsa would be an incredible appointment

Bielsa has often been seen as one of the godfathers of 21st-century football.

Having managed 13 different teams over 35 years, Bielsa’s exciting brand of football would get the Ibrox crowd off their feet like no manager has done before.

He guided Leeds to a ninth-placed finish following their promotion to the Premier League, and is currently managing the Uruguay national team.

Whilst there are no concrete links between Rangers and Bielsa, fans at Ibrox would be delighted at the prospect of seeing him in the Ibrox dugout.
