Philippe Clement makes delusional Rangers claim as pressure mounts on Russell Martin
Rangers’ winless start to the William Hill Premiership season has left Russell Martin on the brink of the sack.
Martin continues to face pressure from fans, whilst Andrew Cavenagh has said that the board will continue to back the former Southampton manager.
With a crucial Premier Sports Cup quarter-final against Hibs coming up, Martin will surely be sacked if the Light Blues are eliminated from the competition they have won a record 28 times.
Former Rangers manager Philippe Clement has made a controversial claim regarding his time in G51, as Martin’s future at the club remains on a knife-edge.

Philippe Clement claims he was well-liked by Gers fans
Clement spoke to Belgian Media outlet GVA about how he was sacked at Rangers.
Clement said: “I sometimes find it hard to put that out of my mind, because the circumstances in which something like that happens aren’t always known to the outside world, and that’s why it’s hard for me to call it dismissal.
“The trick is to see through it. I may have joined those clubs at the wrong time. But I’m still well-liked in Monaco and Glasgow because they know the work I’ve done.”
This statement isn’t exactly accurate, as Rangers fans wanted Clement gone long before he was eventually sacked in February.
Philippe Clement | Manager | Russell Martin |
86 | Games managed | 12 |
55 | Wins | 3 |
16 | Draws | 5 |
15 | Losses | 3 |
63.95 | Win percentage | 25 |
Whilst Clement has a much better record at Rangers, albeit over a longer period of time, he wasn’t the most popular manager to have taken charge at Ibrox.

Philippe Clement remained deeply unpopular with rangers fans
Clement was sacked following a 2-0 loss to St. Mirren in Fenruary, with Barry Ferguson taking over as an interim manager for the rest of the season.
- Eliminated from the Champions League playoffs following a 3-1 aggregate loss to Dynamo Kyiv
- Lost the 2024/25 Premier Sports Cup final to Celtic on penalties
- At the time of his sacking, Rangers were 13 points behind Celtic
Clement did manage to win a piece of silverware at the club by beating Aberdeen in the Premier Sports Cup final in 2023.
Ultimately, Russell Martin is far more unpopular with fans than Clement ever was; however, his claim that he was ‘well-liked’ is simply inaccurate and delusional, as he failed to close the gap on arch-rivals Celtic.
