Barry Ferguson ‘to accept’ Rangers return after Russell Martin sack, but on one condition

Rangers may have to convince Barry Ferguson to return and replace Russell Martin at Ibrox.

The Gers have won just three of their first 12 matches of the season under the Scottish manager, leading to calls for his sacking in G51.

Ferguson criticised the Loch Lomond trip after losing to Hearts on 13 September, which caught many fans by surprise.

With the Glaswegian outfit already looking for Martin’s replacement at Ibrox, the former interim manager could potentially be in contention.

Rangers should offer Barry Ferguson permanent manager role

Ferguson shouldn’t accept the managerial offer at the Gers on an interim basis, Mark Guidi says.

The Scottish journalist believes the ex-midfielder should demand a permanent role at Ibrox if given the opportunity to replace Martin.

With Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises deciding against sticking with the former Scotland international after the end of last season, his return won’t be a good look for the decision-makers.

Speaking on the Go Radio Football Show on 16 September, Guidi said: “If I’m Ferguson, I’m not going back as an interim manager. You either give me the job properly or I’m not touching it with a bargepole. Ranger man or no Rangers man. You either get me a proper deal or I’m not interested. I think that should be his attitude.”

Steven Gerrard another obvious candidate at Ibrox

Cavenagh should schedule a phone call with Steven Gerrard immediately, once Martin is relieved of his duties.

The American owners can’t make the same mistake they made with the former Southampton boss, and the Liverpool icon’s appointment would make the most sense.

Having led the Glaswegian outfit to the league title in 2021, the Englishman has the required track record to instil confidence in the fanbase.

Ferguson’s record as the Gers manager last season

Rangers have a no-brainer decision to sack Martin, with the atmosphere in Ibrox almost toxic.

The Scottish manager’s continuity at the Gers is unsustainable as supporters have planned protests against him and other members of the boardroom.

With the situation arguably untenable with Martin in G51, change is undoubtedly on the horizon at the Light Blues.
