Andrew Cavenagh warned he’ll be next after ferocious Russell Martin scenes at Ibrox

Russell Martin has led Rangers to their worst start to a league campaign in 47 years.

Martin is facing calls to be sacked at Ibrox as Rangers sit 10th in the Scottish Premiership, having not won a single game.

Rangers’ 2-0 loss to Hearts at Ibrox saw fans angrier than ever, with boos ringing out at half-time and full-time.

Martin isn’t the only person in the firing line, with some journalists believing that Andrew Cavenagh could face the same treatment if Martin isn’t sacked.

Andrew Cavenagh must act now to prevent further fan unrest

Speaking on the Daily Record’s Hotline Live on 15 September, journalists Keith Jackson and Andy Newport discussed how matters could get worse for Rangers’ ownership.

Jackson said: “Kevin Thelwell has to be accountable for a number of issues at Rangers, not least the appointment of Russell Martin.”

Newport replied: “I think if Cavenagh, Paraag Marathe, or Patrick Stewart witnessed the ferocity of Ibrox during the Hearts match, they might have changed their mind and sacked Martin.”

Jackson concluded: “Eventually, the Rangers fans are going to start aiming their anger at Cavenagh and the Americans.”

Thelwell has taken similar criticism over the below-par transfer window that saw Rangers have a net spend of over £20m.

However, Cavenagh continues to back both Martin and Thelwell despite the abysmal start to the season.

Rangers take on Hibs in the Premier Sports Cup quarter-finals at Ibrox on Saturday, and it is imperative Martin ends Rangers’ five game winless run.

Andrew Cavenagh must sack Russell Martin if Rangers lose to Hibs

Rangers have failed to beat a Scottish side above League One level this season; a stat which justifiably reflects the mood of the fans at the moment.

An exit from the cup, a competition they have won a record 28 times, would be catastrophic for Rangers, having already been knocked out of the Champions League.

There is a very real possibility that Rangers could be eliminated from two different competitions by the end of September, something which is unfathomable for the club.

With Cavenagh set to attend Rangers’ Premier Sports Cup clash against Hibs, a loss would surely mark the end of Martin’s reign at Rangers.
