The Rangers statement that shows why Russell Martin sack could be imminent

Russell Martin’s appointment has been a nothing short of a disaster for Rangers so far.

Rangers lost 2-0 to Hearts at Ibrox to remain winless in the Scottish Premiership, as the Gers have suffered their worst start for 47 years.

The pressure on Martin at Ibrox has been rising by the day, with fans chanting for the Englishman’s departure during Rangers’ 6-0 humbling at Club Brugge in the Champions League and pretty much ever since.

The board have given Martin their backing to succeed despite this horrific start to life in Scotland, but we’ve seen this situation play out before.

Rangers released a similar statement for Philippe Clement

Philippe Clement ultimately failed at Rangers despite a promising start to life at Ibrox.

Clement was sacked in February 2025 after Rangers’ 2-0 defeat to St. Mirren at Ibrox, but his fate was all but sealed weeks beforehand.

The Belgian oversaw an embarrassing defeat to Queen’s Park in the Scottish Cup, while also falling 18 points behind Celtic in the league.

Despite growing pressure, the Rangers board came out and backed Clement in a public statement by CEO Patrick Stewart.

“I need to make some tough decisions, it comes with the role, but I am committed to making the right ones for Rangers, not just the popular ones,” Stewart said in a media briefing at the time.

“We are backing Philippe at this time as a board. It’s about taking a deeper look at the issues, addressing those problems, and staying focused on building a stronger future for the club. Changing a manager isn’t a silver bullet solution.”

Clement was sacked by Rangers weeks later, as the board quickly realised that the jig was up on the 51-year-old.

Philippe Clement was sacked for less than what Russell Martin has done

It was clear to see that Clement was not the man for the job at Rangers, with results dropping off significantly after a great early spell in his first half-season in charge.

No statements of support, whether on the record or of it as last weekend’s one was, will change that.

Clement is a much superior manager than Martin

Martin is showing new levels of incompetence at Rangers, and if history repeats itself, the Englishman’s departure could be imminent. Fans will argue that it couldn’t come soon enough.
