‘Steven Gerrard would never do what Russell Martin has just done at Rangers’
Rangers have not won the Scottish Premiership since Steven Gerrard led them to glory in 2021, and things now look worse than ever.
Gerrard won Rangers their 55th league title and did it unbeaten, but there has been a rapid decline since, and Russell Martin now has the Gers in 10th place.
Rangers fans are calling for Martin to be sacked, and some even want Gerrard to return to Ibrox, with the Liverpool legend currently out of work.
Martin has been criticised both for his tactical stubbornness, as well as his character, with the manager blaming his players, fans and other factors rather than himself for Rangers’ failings.
Greg Stewart slams Russell Martin
Greg Stewart was a flop at Rangers in his two seasons at Ibrox, but the former winger was part of the squad which won the Scottish Premiership title under Gerrard.
Stewart has now compared Gerrard and Martin’s styles of management and hit out at the current Rangers boss for throwing his own players under the bus.
“Gerrard would never do that,” Stewart told Record Sport.

“When he spoke to the media, he’d always take the blame.“If you got beaten or had a bad game, he’d keep what he had to say in-house.
“He’d say what he had to say to us in the changing room and then say, ‘I’m going to the press and I’ll take the blame.’
“He did that even after a ridiculous display like the one at home to Hamilton just before Covid.
“Steven would always defend his players as much as he possibly could. That was the kind of man he was.”
Russell Martin refuses to take blame
Fans were quick to turn on Martin, but rightly so, given that there is no indication that the woeful performances on display will improve any time soon.
Had Martin taken some accountability for his own failings, fans may have been more patient with him, and could have bought into any long-term project he pitched to them.
However, Martin has blamed the atmosphere at Ibrox, as well as the attitude of his players, and this shows just how out of his depth he is.
Gerrard took some time to become successful at Ibrox, but in the tougher days, he took full responsibility and strived to improve, something which Martin has not done at any of his former clubs, and it is clear why Rangers fans do not like him.
