Russell Martin sack latest as Rangers ‘back-channelling’ emerges at Ibrox

Russell Martin finds himself in a tenuous situation at Rangers ahead of facing Hibernian in the Premier Sports Cup.

The Gers will host David Gray’s team on 20 September in the quarter-finals of the cup competition as the Scottish manager faces the heat in G51.

Andrew Cavenagh is backing Martin despite the defeat to Hearts in the league on 13 September, with supporters calling for a change in the dugout at the Light Blues.

Kevin Thelwell has also come under pressure at Ibrox after the Glaswegian outfit’s worst start to a league campaign in 47 years, and he may already be ready to make a massive call in the coming days.

Rangers make phone calls for possible Russell Martin replacements

Should the Gers sack Martin, they’ve already started the process of looking for potential alternatives, Keith Jackson says.

The Daily Record journalist revealed that the Light Blues are speaking to possible replacement candidates for the Scottish manager at Ibrox, with “back-channelling” going on.

Jackson believes the Glaswegian outfit could potentially want to have plans in place in case they have no choice but to fire the former Southampton boss after the Hibernian fixture.

Speaking on Hotline Live on 16 September, the journalist said: “I understand that phone calls are being made, back-channelling is going on, and Rangers are currently speaking to and sounding out potential alternatives should they decide they can no longer back Russell Martin.

“It sounds to me very much like they are looking to put something in place in case they are forced into taking action this weekend when Rangers play Hibs in the quarter-finals of the League Cup.”

Steven Gerrard or Jose Mourinho: Who can replace Russell Martin at Ibrox?

Steven Gerrard feels like the go-to candidate at Ibrox if the Gers are looking for a new head coach.

The Liverpool icon won the league title with the Light Blues during his spell in charge in G51, and fans would now welcome him back despite previous criticism for leaving midway through the season for Aston Villa.

With a proven track record in Scottish football, the Englishman seems like the perfect person to steady the ship at the Glaswegian outfit as they risk sinking.

Rangers can’t justify keeping Martin in charge any longer, and other members in the boardroom must answer the supporters’ questions after an abysmal start to the season.

While fans want to see the Scottish manager leave sooner rather than later, it looks like they may have to wait for the result against Hibs.

Jose Mourinho is another name being linked to Ibrox, but Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises could potentially want to appoint a more modern manager in G51 despite Martin’s failures.
