Patrick Stewart position now ‘untenable’ at Rangers after Russell Martin sack news
Rangers fans have roundly rejected Russell Martin as manager, and the Union Bears have now had their say on the ongoing crisis.
Martin was heavily booed around Ibrox after Rangers’ defeat to Hearts, with no wins in five Scottish Premiership games so far.
The Rangers hierarchy has astonishingly backed Martin, and this has now turned the attention towards them, after they previously hid behind the manager.
Outspoken fan group Union Bears have now released a statement calling for Martin’s immediate removal as manager, and also targeted the hierarchy.

Rangers fans also want Patrick Stewart sacked
Martin’s failures are obvious to anyone, given the records he has broken, with Rangers’ worst start to a season in 47 years, placing them 10th in the league.
However, there has been little outspoken criticism of the Rangers’ senior figures above Martin until now, as the Union Bears have also called for CEO Patrick Stewart to step down.
Stewart joined Rangers from Manchester United last November, but his time at the Govan club has been an abject failure, and fans have targeted him alongside Martin.
Chairman | Andrew Cavenagh |
Vice-Chairman | Paraag Marathe |
CEO | Patrick Stewart |
Sporting director | Kevin Thelwell |
Technical director | Gretar Steinsson |
Manager | Russell Martin |
“Patrick Stewart has been quick to criticise supporters, yet has refused to take responsibility for his own catastrophic decision,” the Union Bears’ statement read.
“As CEO, the appointment of Russell Martin lies entirely with him. This failure proves he is unfit to lead Rangers. His position is untenable, and he must be held accountable.”
Patrick Stewart not the only one behind Russell Martin decision
The decision to appoint Martin was a collective decision within the club hierarchy, and directors Kevin Thelwell and Gretar Steinsson also played a critical role.
Thelwell reportedly threatened to leave if Martin was sacked in recent weeks, and alongside Stewart, he must also be heavily scrutinised.
The current CEO has been a disaster at Rangers, as Stewart also delayed the sacking of Philippe Clement, but there is a strong case to be made that Thelwell also needs to be dismissed, with some questionable signings made over the summer.
At this point, Rangers’ failures are no longer solely down to Martin, as the figureheads keeping him in charge when he is clearly out of his depth are even more to blame.
