Jose Mourinho tipped for ‘massive’ Rangers appointment after Ibrox visit

Jose Mourinho continued to be touted as a possible replacement for Russell Martin as the pressure grows on the Rangers manager.

Rangers are holding crisis talks over the future of Martin, after the Gers marked their fifth straight Scottish Premiership game without victory on Saturday.

The former Southampton boss only arrived in June but has endured a shocking start to his tenure in Scotland, with many now believing the sack is an inevitability.

Ally McCoist said he’d love Mourinho at Rangers, and the Gers legend’s opinion would likely be shared by much of the fanbase.

Mourinho was sacked by Fenerbahce in August, with the two-time Champions League winner now looking for a new club.

Jose Mourinho would ‘do a fantastic job’ at Rangers

Martin is expected to be sacked by Rangers in the coming days, and there is not many bigger names than Mourinho available to replace him.

The former Manchester United manager has spoken about the possibility of managing in Scotland before, describing his admiration for the Old Firm derby.

Before Fenerbahce played the Gers in March, Mourinho admitted that he had attended the historic game in 2003, describing his first visit to Ibrox as “good times for me”.

And player-turned-pundit Derek Ferguson has exclusively told Ibrox News that he would “love it” for Mourinho to take the reins.

“For me, it’d be amazing to see Mourinho rock up at Ibrox,” the former Rangers midfielder said.

“I think he’d do a fantastic job, but whether that happens I’m not sure. One thing is for sure is that when he came to Ibrox last season, he was sussing things out.

“I’d pray he’d fancy a job like that. He’d be massive and he ticks every box. We talk about the Scottish identity, well Mourinho did his badges in Scotland so he knows all about the passion.

“He’s been to an Old Firm game and knows what it takes. He comes to life in those games. I’d love it to happen and I’m sure every Rangers fan right now would take him.”

Jose Mourinho would be an iconic appointment

There should be no confusion over the fact that Mourinho is not the manager he once was.

The Portuguese genius who broke onto the scene by winning a Champions League with Porto before the Premier League with Chelsea is still there, but several disappointing spells have followed.

Stints at Manchester United, Tottenham, AS Roma, and, most recently, Fenerbahce ended in difficult circumstances.

But there is always something to be said for hiring the name. Mourinho carries a presence that has been rarely replicated throughout the footballing world, and maybe that is exactly the type of character Rangers need right now.
