Barry Ferguson claims he would have done one thing differently to Russell Martin at Rangers

Russell Martin was an unpopular choice as Rangers manager, and is already facing heavy criticism after a winless Scottish Premiership start.

Rangers fans want Martin sacked already, and the Union Bears have threatened protests if CEO Patrick Stewart also does not go.

Martin replaced Barry Ferguson in the summer, but while some would have liked to see the former captain return to replace him, Simon Jordan claimed that this would be a terrible idea for Rangers.

Ferguson has now spoken out about Martin’s management and fundamentally disagrees with one decision he recently made.

Barry Ferguson criticises Russell Martin’s Loch Lomond trip

Martin has now been derided for taking the Rangers squad to Loch Lomond for a team bonding and swimming trip, two days after their defeat to Hearts at Ibrox.

Many have questioned both the nature of the trip as well as the timing, with Rangers set to face Hibernian in a huge Premier Sports Cup clash on Saturday.

Speaking to Go Radio, Ferguson claimed that he would not have taken Rangers on a team bonding trip, but would have put them in training instead.

“Look, managers have all got different ways, maybe to take them out of the environment for the day,” he stated.

“But for me, I would be on the training pitch and making sure I am getting a team ready to rock on the Saturday in the quarter-finals against Hibs.”

Russell Martin’s final gamble for Rangers

Despite receiving the backing of the Rangers board, Martin will be well aware that Saturday’s game against Hibernian could be his last if his side does not win.

With this in mind, the trip to Loch Lomond could have served a purpose, to both clear the minds of himself and his players, and as a final roll of the dice to try and motivate his players.

If the team bonding session works and it leads to a victory and an improved atmosphere in the squad, then perhaps a day off and extra team chemistry may have been the solution, but anything other than a victory would mean that Martin continues to be mocked for such a surprising move.
