Russell Martin is ‘dead man walking on the green mile’ as Rangers colleague also under microscope
Russell Martin finds himself under increasing pressure following Rangers’ 2-0 loss to Hearts at Ibrox.
Martin is facing intense scrutiny at Rangers, yet continues to be backed by Kevin Thelwell and Andrew Cavenagh.
Thelwell said he would step down if Martin was sacked in the next few weeks, prompting speculation surrounding his own future at the club.

Kevin Thelwell must be criticised for performance at the club
Following Rangers’ 2-0 defeat to Hearts, Martin claimed that his players were scared of the occasion.
Journalist Keith Jackson, speaking on the Daily Record Hotline Live on 14 September, was brutal in his assessment of the job Thelwell has done at Rangers so far.
He said: “If your recruitment department is supplying you with players that can’t pluck up enough courage to pull on a shirt and go out and play in front of your home supporters, you’ve got an issue there.
“That suggests to me that due diligence hasn’t been properly done.”
Thelwell has come under fire at Rangers, not just for hiring Martin, but for spending a huge sum of money and unproven players.
“Russell Martin is on the green mile, he’s a dead man walking as far as I can see.
“If I’m Andrew Cavenagh, I’m looking at Thelwell and wondering, ‘Can I give him the responsibility to head up the search for the next manager?'”

Bojan Miovski might be Kevin Thelwell’s only smart signing
Thelwell’s £10m gamble on Youssef Chermiti may come off, but so much money being spent on a back-up striker seems incredibly foolish.
However, starting striker Bojan Miovski could be the deal of the summer if he replicates his good form with Aberdeen a couple of years ago.
Season | Goals | Assists |
2022/23 | 26 | 4 |
2023/24 | 18 | 3 |
Miovski then moved to Girona, yet failed to get any consistent game time last season, before Rangers brought him back to Scotland for a fee that could rise to £4.2m.
Despite failing to score against Celtic and Hearts, Miovski has been backed to succeed by journalists and pundits who all believe that he is Rangers’ best signing by far.
Martin and Thelwell will need Miovski to be amongst the goals in the next few matches, otherwise, both may be leaving Ibrox sooner than expected.
