Rangers sack latest from United States as Andrew Cavenagh holds Russell Martin crisis talks

Russell Martin is under serious pressure at Rangers with fans and former players all calling for him to be dismissed.

Fans at Ibrox chanted for Martin to get out as Rangers were beaten by Hearts, and many expected that he would be sacked by the end of the weekend.

However, it since emerged that Rangers are planning for Martin to continue, with the manager set to take charge of their game against Hibernian next weekend.

Pressure is growing on the Rangers hierarchy to make a ruthless decision over the under-fire manager, and Chairman Andrew Cavenagh has now held crisis talks with Martin.

Andrew Cavenagh gives Russell Martin his backing

Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises completed a takeover of Rangers in the summer, and while they have delivered on their promised investment, results have gotten worse.

The longer Martin continues to drag Rangers down, with the Gers currently 10th in the Scottish Premiership, the worse it will look for Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe.

Scottish Sun Sport has now revealed that Cavenagh has spoken with Martin since the Hearts defeat, but rather than sacking him, he has given the manager his full backing.

It is reported that Cavenagh contacted Martin on Sunday from the USA, and “made it clear” that he is not in danger of the sack, and Martin has reportedly convinced Cavenagh that he can steady the ship.

This is certainly not what Rangers fans would have wanted to hear, and Cavenagh may have now thrown himself into the fire at Ibrox.

Andrew Cavenagh can define Rangers legacy over Russell Martin

There was plenty of excitement and optimism when Cavenagh joined Rangers, but promises of new investment and ruthless ambition felt pointless after they decided to hire Martin.

The Rangers owners have found themselves out of the firing line for criticism so far, with Martin, Kevin Thelwell and Patrick Stewart bearing the brunt of the anger from the fanbase.

However, this decision could reflect badly on Cavenagh for years to come. Despite a heavy investment into the club, the Chairman cannot see what every fan can, and is blindly backing a manager doomed to fail.

Even if Martin is eventually dismissed, supporters will not forget the extra undeserved backing the manager has received from the owner, at a time when a ruthless decision could save Rangers’ season.
