Kevin Thelwell updates 49ers & Cavenagh on what he saw at Ibrox in Russell Martin sack update

Rangers fans unequivocally want Russell Martin to be dismissed as manager, and anger is now growing towards the club hierarchy.

Martin now has the lowest points per game average of any permanent Rangers manager in history, and fans have already made his position untenable.

Rangers fans loudly chanted for Martin to be sacked as they lost to Hearts at Ibrox for the first time in over a decade, with it clear that he has no future in Glasgow.

Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises are facing their biggest challenge since they took over Rangers in the summer, which saw them hire Kevin Thelwell and Martin, and there could be a decision soon.

Kevin Thelwell updated Rangers owners on Russell Martin crisis

It emerged after the Hearts defeat that there is no Rangers board meeting scheduled this week to discuss Martin’s future, but that does not mean that talks are not happening behind the scenes.

The Daily Record has now reported in its print edition that Thelwell has been keeping Cavenagh and the Rangers ownership informed on Martin’s struggles at Ibrox.

Rangers have struggled under Martin

“Sporting director Kevin Thelwell witnessed the backlash from the punters and is understood to have updated Cavenagh and his partners from the San Francisco 49ers on the situation,” it is stated.

“For now, Martin remains in post with the support of the club’s US owners and will be in the dugout for next week’s Premier Sports Cup quarter-final against Hibs.”

Cavenagh is set to fly into Glasgow to attend the Hibernian match, but this was a pre-planned trip, rather than a new development, as Martin continues to fail.

Kevin Thelwell could also leave with Russell Martin

It was recently reported that Thelwell threatened to resign if Martin was sacked, and the situation has only worsened since.

Thelwell has come under scrutiny after a summer of heavy spending under his guidance saw Rangers recruit 13 players, but some of these deals are questionable.

Rangers’ record outlay on Youssef Chermiti from Everton was pushed for by Thelwell, and there are concerns that the striker may not live up to that price tag, having failed to score at all for the Toffees.

If Thelwell has decided he is happy with Rangers’ current performance levels, then he would also deserve the sack if the manager is eventually dismissed, and he should already be facing more criticism as the driving force behind Martin’s appointment.
