Chris Sutton baffled after Rangers fan’s ‘drastic’ claim live on BBC after loss vs Hearts

Rangers have no one but themselves to blame after appointing Russell Martin.

Ibrox hosted Hearts in the William Hill Premiership on 13 September, and Lawrence Shankland’s brace sealed a 2-0 victory for the visitors.

Despite fan backlash in G51, Martin continues to retain the faith of Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises and will take charge of the Gers against Hibernian in the Premier Sports Cup on 20 September.

With the Glaswegian outfit sitting 10th in the league table after five matches, supporters are rightfully fearful of their prospects.

Rangers will not be relegated from the William Hill Premiership

It’s a bit “drastic” to think that the Gers will be relegated from the William Hill Premiership this season, Chris Sutton says.

The ex-Celtic forward dismissed claims from one fan who suggested that the Gers wouldn’t win under Martin and risk relegation at Ibrox.

Sutton admits that while supporters have every right to feel that the Glaswegian outfit should be challenging for titles, going down to the William Hill Championship may not be a realistic scenario in G51.

Speaking on BBC Radio’s 606 Football Phone In on 14 September, the Englishman said: “You’re not going to go down. That’s a little bit drastic. But from a Rangers fan’s perspective, you expect your team to be challenging for the title.”

Russell Martin should be sacked before things get worse at Ibrox

Martin is on course to break multiple unsavoury records at Ibrox, with already the worst points-per-game rate of any Gers manager in history, with 1.17.

The Scottish manager has shown that he’s out of his depth at the Light Blues after failing to take lessons from his previous losses.

It’s frustrating to see the former Southampton boss continue to make the same mistakes of wanting to play possession-based football week in, week out with no end result.

Martin’s sacking at Rangers feels inevitable at this point, and a loss to Hibs should surely be the end of his tenure in G51.

The 39-year-old head coach has been unable to improve any player since taking charge of the Gers and has had a falling out with arguably the best player in the squad — Nicolas Raskin.

While relegation might be far-fetched at the Glaswegian outfit, trophies are what supporters expected from Martin.
