Steven Gerrard ‘obvious’ Rangers candidate to replace Russell Martin at Ibrox

Rangers may return to Steven Gerrard as Russell Martin looks over his shoulder after losing to Hearts on Saturday.

Ibrox hosted Derek McInnes’ team on 13 September in the William Hill Premiership, and the visitors secured the three points after a 2-0 win.

Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises are backing Martin for now, but things could potentially get worse for the Gers as they face Hibernian in the Premier Sports Cup on 20 September.

With a change in the dugout possibly in the offing at the Glaswegian outfit, it will be interesting to see who the American owners will go with.

Rangers should get Steven Gerrard back as Russell Martin loses to Hearts

Gerrard’s return to the Gers may be a no-brainer after Martin’s tenure, Jonny McFarlane says.

The Scottish journalist feels the Liverpool icon is the obvious choice to take charge at Ibrox after the Light Blues’ worst start to the league campaign in 47 years.

McFarlane feels most people will want to see the Englishman make his comeback at the Glaswegian outfit after winning the league title during his first spell in G51.

Speaking on The Rangers Review on 14 September, the journalist said: “If we’re talking about who Rangers should go and get, I think the obvious one would be Gerrard. I think that’s where most people will go.”

Russell Martin sack: Who are other replacement options at Ibrox?

Jose Mourinho has been heavily linked with the Ibrox job, with the Portuguese manager free to take up a new role after leaving Fenerbahce recently.

The two-time Champions League winner would certainly be a blockbuster appointment at the Gers if they do get him.

However, the former Real Madrid and Chelsea boss arguably isn’t in his prime, and may not be the right option for the Glaswegian outfit.

Rangers also spoke with Mark van Bommel when they were looking for a new manager last summer, and he could potentially be in the running once again.

Martin’s sacking at the Gers seems inevitable, and the fans have wanted to see a change in the dugout since witnessing the 9-1 defeat on aggregate against Club Brugge in the Champions League, the Glaswegian outfit’s joint-worst loss in Europe.

Gerrard should surely be at the top of the list for Cavenagh and the 49ers as they hope to bring the good days back to G51.
