Russell Martin to break four unwanted records as Rangers sack looms
Russell Martin may not have long left to save his Rangers career, with fans already unanimous in their desire to see him leave.
Martin’s tenure has been a disaster so far despite a summer of heavy spending under new ownership, with Rangers winless in five Scottish Premiership games.
Performances and results have been dire, and Rangers were humiliated in the Champions League playoff rounds to add to their woes.
The board have decided not to dismiss the manager yet, but there is an air of inevitability that Martin could end up being sacked by Rangers within two weeks, and if he is, several records will be broken.

Russell Martin’s record-breaking Rangers disaster
Martin was backed heavily in the summer with a lot of transfers and a bigger outlay than anyone else in Scotland, but Rangers sit 10th in the Scottish Premiership.
Rangers fans have criticised his tactics and his man-management, with Nicolas Raskin absent from the squad after a rift with Martin.
Martin has already broken several records:
- Rangers have failed to win their first five league games of the season for the first time in 47 years.
- The 2-0 defeat to Hearts was Rangers’ first loss to them since 2020.
- It was also their first defeat to Hearts at Ibrox since 2014.
- Martin now has the worst points per game rate of any permanent Rangers manager in history, at 1.17 points per game.
Martin will be in charge of Rangers’ clash with Hibernian in the Scottish League Cup, and another loss would surely make his already precarious position truly untenable, which would mean he breaks yet another record.

Russell Martin could be shortest-serving Rangers manager in history
As things stand, the shortest spell any permanent head coach has had at Rangers is Paul Le Guen, who lasted just 186 days at Ibrox.
Le Guen famously had a feud with captain Barry Ferguson, which helped lead to his exit, and there are parallels to be drawn with the way Martin has dealt with Raskin.
Martin has currently been in the job for 102 days, meaning that if he departs Rangers before December 7, he will set a new record for the shortest permanent spell, and depending on how the next few weeks go, it would be fair to suggest that he will be remembered as the worst coach the club has had.
