Russell Martin sack latest at Rangers as Andrew Cavenagh ready to jet into Glasgow

Rangers fans almost unanimously want Russell Martin to be relieved of his role after their worst start to a season in 47 years.

Hearts beat Rangers 2-0 at Ibrox on Saturday in a game which saw Martin heavily booed by his own fans, and they have now failed to win any of their five Scottish Premiership games under him.

Kris Boyd is among the former players who have called for Martin’s sacking after just a few months in charge, with it clear to most that Rangers do not have a successful future under him.

Scrutiny is now being placed on the club hierarchy, who have backed Martin until now, but there has now been an update on his future.

Rangers will not sack Russell Martin this week

Despite the poor results, woeful performances, toxicity among fans and the disharmony in the squad, Rangers have not planned any talks over Martin’s future, and do not intend to sack him this week.

Chris Jack from The Rangers Review has now reported that the board’s stance has not changed despite the defeat to Hearts and the scenes at Ibrox, with Rangers fans chanting “sacked in the morning” alongside the visiting fans.

Rangers’ record under Martin

Rangers Chairman Andrew Cavenagh completed a takeover alongside 49ers Enterprises in the summer, but optimism faded when they hired Martin, and has now been completely extinguished by this start to the season.

It is reported that Cavenagh will fly into Glasgow on a pre-planned trip this week and will be in attendance as Rangers face Hibernian in the Premier Sports Cup next week.

Martin will be in charge for that game, and there is no board meeting planned to discuss his future, as things stand.

Rangers board will come under scrutiny

Given that they only just arrived in the summer and have invested in the transfer market, Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises have escaped most of the criticism, but fans could quickly turn on the new owners.

Kevin Thelwell’s role has come under scrutiny after his role in hiring and backing Martin, as well as some of his transfer decisions.

The new Rangers ownership and board could either show their ruthless ambition by sacking Martin, admitting they got it wrong, and ending his nightmare reign, but while they double down on him, they risk ruining the entire season.

If Rangers are knocked out of the cup against Hibernian, it could be as a direct result of not sacking Martin this week, and blame will be turned towards the board for their indecision in a time of crisis.
