Patrick Stewart and one other Rangers appraisal on cards after Russell Martin sack
Patrick Stewart and Kevin Thelwell played a hand in bringing Russell Martin to Rangers, but losing to Hearts on Saturday has exposed the failures of the appointment.
Martin looks like a dead man walking at Ibrox as Hearts broke their 11-year winless streak in G51, winning 2-0 in the William Hill Premiership on 13 September.
The 39-year-old head coach has failed to live up to expectations at the Light Blues and now faces the wrath of the supporters.
Stewart and Thelwell backed Martin after the humiliating loss to Club Brugge in the Champions League play-off, but things need to change quickly at the Glaswegian outfit.

Rangers to assess Patrick Stewart and Kevin Thelwell at Ibrox
Stewart and Thelwell need to take responsibility and sack Martin as soon as possible, Gary Keown says.
The Daily Mail journalist believes the Gers’ chief executive officer and sporting director must realise their errors and replace the Scottish manager at Ibrox.
Once the former Southampton boss leaves, Stewart and Thelwell may come under the scanner before the appointment of a new head coach in G51.
Keown wrote in the Daily Mail on 14 September: “Making errors is no sin. Correcting them is vital. And when Thelwell and Stewart have done that, further appraisal of their toolkits for the next round of recruitment can begin.”

Kevin Thelwell must answer questions after recruitment at Ibrox
Thelwell’s future at Ibrox also needs to be questioned after spending a significant sum on new players in the previous transfer window.
The Gers signed 12 new players last summer, excluding Lyall Cameron, but one can argue that only a couple have succeeded so far in G51.
Max Aarons and Joe Rothwell were Martin’s go-to in the starting lineup at the start of the season, but now find themselves on the bench after consistently bad performances.
- Martin has a 25 per cent win rate at the Gers.
- The Light Blues are nine points off the top of the league table.
- Hearts beat the Glaswegian outfit for the first time at Ibrox in 11 years.
Rangers bought Youssef Chermiti for a deal worth £10million, and Thelwell has arguably put his reputation on the line for the centre-forward.
Djeidi Gassama is the only new signing who has shown some fight and spirit since moving to Ibrox from Sheffield Wednesday, while Jayden Meghoma has also been decent since joining on loan from Brentford.
Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises must do a thorough assessment of why things have gone wrong in the first few months of their ownership.
