Don Hutchison slams Rangers board amid latest Russell Martin update

Rangers will not sack Russell Martin just yet, despite calls from the fanbase and former players after a nightmare start to the season.

Martin has failed to win his first five Scottish Premiership games in charge, and Rangers fell to their first home defeat to Hearts in 11 years.

Fans at Ibrox voiced their fury with the manager, while the likes of Kris Boyd has called for Rangers to dismiss Martin.

It has emerged that Martin’s job at Rangers is safe for now, and former Scotland star Don Hutchison cannot believe this update.

Don Hutchison questions Rangers board

Rangers had total upheaval in their hierarchy over the summer as new owners and director Kevin Thelwell brought Martin in.

Patrick Stewart still remains after his appointment last November, and he could repeat the same mistake he made in February, as Stewart delayed the sacking of Philippe Clement after a cup defeat to Queens Park.

Martin’s record at Rangers is abysmal

Now, with Martin clearly the wrong fit for Rangers, the fact the club are still backing him is worrying, and Hutchison, who appeared 26 times for Scotland, has now called out the board over this decision.

“You would question the Rangers board if they are ok with this start to the season…” He posted on X in response to the news that Martin is set to stay on.

Rangers board will come under microscope

The Rangers board and hierarchy have been able to hide behind Martin for now, with the majority of fan anger directed at the manager, but the longer he stays, the worse it will be for them.

At this point, it is obvious that Martin is out of his depth and refusing to resign, and if he continues, and Rangers do not improve, the blame will be shifted from him to those actively keeping him in charge.

Clearly, Thelwell and the Rangers hierarchy made a mistake in hiring Martin, with a hugely negative reaction to his appointment now justified, but they can correct this by ending it now before it becomes even worse.

Some fans are already adamant that Stewart should be the next out the door after Martin, but Thelwell will also find his position under a lot of scrutiny unless a ruthless decision is made.
