Russell Martin pay off would seal very sorry end at Rangers if sack happens

Russell Martin is still on very thin ice at Rangers after a tough start to the season.

The Gers have gotten off to their worst start in the league in 42 years, drawing their first four matches, subsequently sitting six points behind Celtic and Hearts.

Martin’s future is up in the air at Ibrox, with many supporters already demanding a change in the dugout.

Andrew Cavenagh may also pull the plug on Kevin Thelwell, as the new sporting director has played a massive role in the Glaswegian outfit’s recruitment strategy, and a pay-off could be on the cards.

Rangers sacking Russell Martin would cap off damning start under Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises

Martin is certainly under pressure at the Gers after missing out on Champions League football, Plumley says.

Being knocked out of the European competition by Club Brugge was a massive financial blow at Ibrox.

A pay-off to sack the Scottish manager would highlight the stark issues the Glaswegian outfit have faced under the new head coach over the last few months.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, the football finance expert said: “I think [a pay-off] would just cap off a pretty damning pre-season and start to the season.

We know they’re going to be there or thereabouts in the title race. You don’t want to lose that kind of ground they’ve already lost immediately on Celtic, but it’s kind of almost one of the two is going to win the league.

“But the Champions League was a big blow. They’ve got to go through a lot more qualifying rounds than Celtic have, but to not get there after all that work was one of the things that puts a huge impact on the finances moving forward for this year. And that’s going to have a knock-on effect. And you’ve got the growing pressure of how the league season started.

“I think in general terms, when we look back at the season, they’ll be alright and finish where they normally finish, and things will pick up. But the pressure is certainly there. And if he were to be sacked very early on, there would ultimately be a very sorry end to what’s been a difficult few months for the club.”

Andrew Cavenagh must sack Russell Martin if Hearts win at Ibrox

Martin may be facing his ultimate test at Ibrox against Hearts on Saturday, and losing the 19-game unbeaten run against the Jambos will undoubtedly be damaging for his future.

Rangers haven’t lost to the Edinburgh outfit at home in 11 years, but Derek McInnes will be hoping to change that on 13 September.

However, Martin’s decision to leave Nicolas Raskin out of the squad could potentially come back to bite him as the midfielder can arguably be a game-changer for the Gers.

Cavenagh shouldn’t hesitate to sack the former Southampton boss if the Light Blues lose against Hearts, as that’s what a majority of the fans will likely want to see.
