Alan Shearer in damning one-word indictment on Rangers and Celtic, Gary Lineker completely agrees
Rangers and Celtic haven’t been able to make a positive impression on Alan Shearer or Gary Lineker this season.
Russell Martin’s future at Ibrox is uncertain as the Gers have won just three of their first 11 matches under the new manager.
On the other hand, the Parkhead faithful are furious at the Celtic hierarchy after their underwhelming business in the transfer window.
The Old Firm rivals find themselves in the Europa League in the current campaign after embarrassing defeats in the Champions League play-off, leaving much to be desired from Scottish football.
Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer disappointed by Rangers vs Celtic
Shearer and Lineker slammed the two Old Firm rivals after what they saw in the derby on 31 August.
The Gers faced the Hoops at Ibrox in the William Hill Premiership before the international break, but the Newcastle United icon branded the game “dreadful”.
Lineker also wasn’t pleased with the game, but pointed out how Scotland have been impressive recently after drawing against Denmark and beating Belarus.
Speaking on The Rest Is Football on 10 September, Shearer said: “I didn’t go to the game, but I watched it with a load of Scotsmen watching Rangers against Celtic. And that was dreadful.”
Lineker added: “I watched that game. I watched it all. It was poor. I mean, Rangers were okay in the first half, but the second half, there was nothing. Thankfully, their national team are performing slightly better.”

Celtic leave door open for Russell Martin at Ibrox in the William Hill Premiership
One positive thing that Martin can take from Celtic’s problems this season is that the Gers can still consider themselves in the race for the league title.
The Scottish manager is under intense pressure at the Light Blues, but it could’ve been worse had the Hoops gone nine points ahead of them in the William Premiership by winning the Old Firm derby.
There’s hope amongst some fans in G51 that the Bears can still catch up to Hearts and Brendan Rodgers’ team, but the former Southampton boss needs to get results quickly.
- Martin has a 27 per cent win rate at the Gers.
- The Glaswegian outfit’s 9-1 defeat on aggregate against Club Brugge in the Champions League was their joint-worst loss.
- The Bears have conceded 17 goals this season.
Derek McInnes will be hoping to spoil the mood for Rangers on 13 September as the Jambos look to end their 11-year winless run at Ibrox.
If Martin ends up dropping points against Hearts, the knives will arguably be out in G51 for him and Kevin Thelwell.
The former Everton sporting director backed the Scottish manager in the summer transfer window, and the supporters won’t tolerate any more failures.
