Kevin Thelwell warned he could get axed already by Andrew Cavenagh in double Rangers sacking
Rangers spent big in the closing days of the summer transfer window as they look to change their fortunes under Russell Martin.
Martin is under huge pressure at Ibrox, whilst sporting director Kevin Thelwell has admitted change is needed at Rangers.
A busy summer has meant that 13 players have arrived at Rangers, with Thelwell making a number of different types of signings.
Thelwell reportedly gave Rangers an ultimatum by threatening to resign if Martin is sacked, and he has come under fire for how he has spent the money given to him by chairman Andrew Cavenagh.

Kevin Thelwell must improve if he wants to be successful at Rangers
Journalist Keith Jackson, speaking via the Daily Record’s Hotline Live on 10 September, was critical of Thelwell’s contribution at the club so far.
Referring to Thelwell’s ultimatum, Jackson said: “I’m not sure if Thelwell is on safe enough ground to be throwing threats at anyone right now.
“If I’m Andrew Cavenagh, I’m thinking that I can get rid of Martin and Thelwell in one go.”
Whilst Rangers have shown ambition in the window, there are still big questions marks over some of the signings.
“He hasn’t done enough, everything he has done has looked sketchy, in terms of the profile of players he’s been determined to bring in and the arrogant streak he has brought to the club,” Jackson added.
“Thelwell has been singularly unimpressive so far; it’s early days but I’m not sure he really gets it.”
Rangers had a net spend of £20million in the summer, with Thelwell outlining that the squad has massively improved.
However, the proof is in the pudding, and Thelwell’s assurance that Martin is the right man for the job is currently under question at this moment in time.

Rangers have three home games in three different competitions coming up, and a loss to league leaders Hearts could spell the end for Martin and Thelwell’s partnership at Rangers.
Kevin Thelwell’s big gamble must pay off
Chermiti joined Rangers for £8m, becoming the Gers’ most expensive player in 25 years.
Thelwell has faced significant criticism for this signing, having also acquired Chermiti for his former club, Everton, in 2023.
His goal record is disappointing to say the least, and he has very little confidence in senior football at the moment.
- Chermiti scored three goals in 22 appearances for Sporting CP
- Has scored zero goals in 24 appearances for Everton
- Earned £8m move to Rangers
It’s a baffling move by Thelwell, and Rangers fans will be hoping they are proved wrong when expressing their doubts on the Portuguese striker.
