BBC pundit forced to immediately eat his words after what Rangers player just did

11 Rangers players are on international duty, hoping to gain confidence before returning to Auchenhowie and Ibrox.

Rangers are winless in the Scottish Premiership and have failed to qualify for the Champions League.

Russell Martin is facing extreme pressure already, yet the 49ers are willing to stand by him for now.

He will be thrilled to see the performances of some of his players whilst away on international duty, with one star turning out to be the unlikely hero.

Derek Cornelius stuns pundit with brilliance against Wales

Working as a pundit for BBC Wales, former Wolves and Leicester striker Nathan Blake was stunned by what Cornelius did.

Cornelius scored a brilliant free-kick as Canada beat Wales 1-0 in Swansea.

Blake said: “Sometimes you’ve just got to stand up and give a round of applause for some absolutely fantastic quality.

“I’m questioning why a centre-half is taking a free-kick, but he’s just rammed it down my throat. It was an absolutely superb free-kick.”

Aside from the free-kick, Cornelius was assured throughout and helped limit the Wales attack to very few chances for his manager, Jesse Marsch.

Martin will be hoping to give Cornelius his debut in the crunch match against Hearts at Ibrox, and if he can perform as well for his club as he has been for country, then Rangers could have a brilliant centre-back on their hands.

Derek Cornelius could become Rangers’ most important signing

The Canadian international looks set to partner John Souttar at the heart of the Rangers defence.

Souttar has been hugely impressive for Scotland, recording two clean sheets whilst playing for his country during the September break.

Cornelius would likely come in for the struggling Nasser Djiga, with Rangers looking to solidify their backline.

In Cornelius, Rangers have a calm, composed centre-back who can also produce moments of magic from set-piece situations.

That could be massive in these tight games, starting against Hearts.
