Rangers vs Celtic — All you need to know about the fierce Old Firm rivalry

Rangers and Celtic have a long-standing history, with the Old Firm rivals two of the most successful clubs in the world.

The Gers have seen their dominance diminish over the last few decades, with the Hoops now claiming the bragging rights in terms of the number of titles won.

Nonetheless, supporters in G51 hope to see their team reign supreme under the new ownership of Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises, although Russell Martin’s stint at Ibrox hasn’t started on the best of terms.

The most recent Old Firm derby at Ibrox was a drab 0-0 draw, with both sets of fans disappointed with how the 2025/26 season has started for their teams, leaving the door open for Hearts or Hibernian to do the unthinkable.

Rangers vs Celtic history

What one needs to know about the Old Firm rivalry is that it runs deeper than football, which contributes to the intense atmosphere between the opposing supporters.

The Gers and the Hoops have faced each other 447 times in all major competitions, with the Bhoys boasting the biggest victory, winning 7-1 in October 1957.

Overall, both teams have the same number of Scottish top-flight league titles, with 55 each, with Celtic equalling that tally by winning the William Hill Premiership last season.

As for Scottish Cups, the Hoops boast 42 wins while the Bears sit at 34, but have six more Scottish League Cups than their Old Firm rivals, 28.

In terms of European trophies, the Bhoys were the first British team to win the European Cup, beating Inter Milan in the 1967 final, while the Bears have a UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup to their name.

Old Firm record in recent decades

During Phillipe Clement’s reign at Ibrox, Celtic went on a seven-game unbeaten run in the Old Firm Derby, drawing just once.

However, the last four meetings between the two teams have seen the Gers take the bragging rights, with two wins and two draws.

Since 2000, the two Glaswegian giants have met each other in 107 matches, with the Hoops winning 56 games and the Gers coming out on top 34 times.

This season, Rangers fans will have one request from Martin, and that will be to stop Celtic from winning the 56th league title before them.

Domestic titles won by Rangers and Celtic

Financial struggles at the Gers saw them drop to the fourth tier of Scottish football in 2012, leading to a four-year wait to return to the top flight.

Celtic’s domination during the Light Blues’ struggles saw them win nine titles in a row between 2011 and 2020, a record matched by them between the 1960s and 1970s and the Bears between the 1980s and 1990s.

Steven Gerrard’s team famously stopped Celtic from going 10 in a row in 2021, but since then, the Old Firm rivalry has once again seen major laurels go to G40.

Over the coming years, it will be interesting to see where the tide flows in Glasgow.
