Hamza Igamane gamble to pay off after Rangers offer striker to six clubs

Rangers may have had no option but to sell Hamza Igamane in the previous transfer window after his antics.

Russell Martin was unable to rely on the 22-year-old at the Gers, and it was clear that it would be best for both parties if he left.

Igamane’s refusal to come on against St Mirren on 24 August in the William Hill Premiership in the 1-1 draw made the youngster’s situation untenable in G51.

Subsequently, Kevin Thelwell accepted around £10million at Ibrox from LOSC Lille, who will hope the Morocco international lives up to the expectations.

LOSC Lille deal with Rangers impresses as Hamza Igamane scores in Zambia vs Morocco

Igamane was offered to six teams in Ligue 1 last summer, but only Lille took a chance on him, according to Sebastien Denis.

The Footmercato journalist has thanked Les Dogues for taking a gamble on signing the young centre-forward from Ibrox in the previous transfer window after his goal against Zambia in the World Cup Qualifiers on 8 September as Walid Regragui’s team won 2-0.

Denis admits the Moroccan striker’s price tag may have been expensive, but compared it to some of the other deals for attackers recently.

The journalist wrote on X on 8 September: “To say that Igamane was offered to six Ligue 1 teams this summer and that only Lille really went all in on him. Thanks to Lille for believing in him. So €11m might be expensive, but when you see the price of some strikers this summer…”

Hamza Igamane money invested in Youssef Chermiti

Kevin Thelwell will hope his own gamble at Ibrox with Youssef Chermiti is successful after signing him for a deal worth £10m, including add-ons, from Everton.

It arguably came as a surprise for many fans at the Gers since the 21-year-old’s two-year stint at the Toffees was nothing to write home about.

The Portugal Under-21 international now comes to the Light Blues with a lot of weight on his shoulders to prove his worth in Scotland.

Rangers now also have Bojan Miovski at their disposal, and the 26-year-old’s experience in the William Hill Premiership with Aberdeen certainly gives him an edge to be a regular starter.

The Gers have gotten off to a poor start this season, conceding 17 goals in all competitions and scoring 15 in 11 matches so far.

With four consecutive draws to start the league campaign, Martin will hope for Chermiti and Miovski to fire the Glaswegian outfit to victory against Hearts on 13 September.
