Rangers have solution for Jayden Meghoma worry in another new Russell Martin signing

Rangers fans have no reason to be satisfied despite the apparent £20million net spend in the previous transfer window.

The Gers added 13 players to their first team in the summer, with big-hitters like Hamza Igamane and Cyriel Dessers leaving.

Jayden Meghoma has started life on the front foot at Ibrox after completing a season-long loan move from Brentford, but there will be concern among supporters in G51 about a lack of depth at left-back.

Russell Martin heavily relied on Max Aarons at the start of the season before the defender’s underwhelming displays saw him lose his place in the starting lineup, but others could provide cover on the left side of defence.

Derek Cornelius to play left-back at Rangers

Derek Cornelius was the final signing of the Gers on deadline day, moving on loan with an option to buy in the deal.

The 27-year-old spent last season at Olympique Marseille, playing under the renowned Roberto De Zerbi, but now finds himself at Ibrox to get regular minutes ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Tam McManus has expressed concerns about the Light Blues’ prospects at left-back, with the former Scottish forward worried about who can provide cover in that position if Meghoma is injured.

Speaking on PLZ Soccer on 5 September, he said: “I think you would be worried as a Rangers supporter about a left-back cover. I think Meghoma has looked really good. Looks good going forward. If he gets injured, they’ve not got another left-back.”

Thelwell has already admitted that the Canada international can be deployed as a left-back during the recent Q&A with RangersTV.

Cornelius has proven his skills against the likes of Lionel Messi, and supporters in G51 will be expecting a lot from the versatile defender at the Glaswegian outfit.

Russell Martin to drop Nasser Djiga from starting lineup

Nasser Djiga may be benched at Ibrox in the coming matches after making some huge errors recently, with Cornelius taking his place in the team.

It doesn’t look like the Wolves loanee will have an easy way back into the starting lineup at Rangers, as Aarons and James Tavernier can also potentially provide cover in the absence of Meghoma instead of the Canada international.

Martin is under increasing pressure at Ibrox and can’t continue to wait for some of the players to find their feet.

Fans in G51 want to see results now, and unfortunately for Djiga, that may mean he will have to fight for his place at the Glaswegian outfit.
