Why do Rangers play in royal blue home kits?
Rangers have a long, proud history as one of the biggest clubs in the United Kingdom, and indeed with one of the biggest fanbases in European football.
Rangers have won 55 league titles in their history, which Celtic only just matched in the Scottish Premiership in 2025, and have also won 34 Scottish Cups and 28 Scottish League Cups.
Rangers have been less successful in recent seasons, but there was optimism as a new ownership group led by 49ers Enterprises completed a takeover in the summer of 2025.
As one of the oldest clubs around, Rangers have always been associated with the colour blue, and their home kits have seen different variations of it over the years.

Rangers have always played in blue
Since Rangers were founded in 1872, they have always played in blue, but the shades have differed over the years.
From 1872 until 1921, the Teddy Bears have played with a light blue shirt, before this was changed to a royal blue darker shade, which has remained ever since.
The main colours of Rangers are red, white and blue, the same colours of the Union Jack, with many flags found at Ibrox as Gers fans are mostly in favour of the Union.
- Rangers’ home kit for the 2025-26 season is predominantly blue, with white and red on the collar.
- The away kit is white with red and blue featuring on the chest.
- The third kit is black, with white lettering.
Some kits in recent years have had different shades of blue, with the 2014-15 kit the lightest in years, and Rangers do carry the nickname of the Light Blues despite playing in a darker shade.
Rangers kits are usually majority blue with little patterning, in direct contrast to the hooped style that Old Firm rivals Celtic design their shirts in.

Rangers’ away kit colours
Rangers away kits have varied in colours over the years, for matches away from Ibrox, although home kits are preferred unless there is a clash.
Away and third kits in recent years have taken different shades of black, or white, and a popular release was a white-dominant shirt with red and blue also featuring.
There was controversy as several orange kits have been released over the years, with some believing that this references the Orange Order from Northern Ireland.
