Rangers anthems – Origins of the iconic ‘Follow Follow’ and ‘Simply the Best’

Rangers have a history that justifies the use of Tina Turner’s Simply the Best as the team makes their way onto the sacred Ibrox pitch.

While the Gers’ achievements in recent seasons hasn’t been anything to write home about, they’ve won 55 league titles, the most recent in 2021 under Steven Gerrard.

With the way Russell Martin’s tenure is going at Ibrox, it doesn’t look like 56 will come anytime soon, but that doesn’t take away from the Light Blues’ past glory.

Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises have made a sea of changes since taking over the Glaswegian outfit, but while owners, managers and players come and go, the songs will always remain, and Ibrox News looks at how they originated.

Rangers official anthem Follow Follow: Where did it come from?

“Follow Follow” is the anthem adopted by the Gers’ and is a rendition of a revivalist hymn “Follow On”.

Supporters can be heard serenading “Follow Follow Glasgow Rangers” as they make their voices heard, especially on their travels to away stadiums.

The lyrics of the anthem translate the loyalty the fans have to the Glaswegian outfit and their desire to follow them during the highs and lows.

Tina Turner’s The Best: Why do the Ibrox faithful serenade the song?

Martin’s record at Ibrox may not reflect the image of being the best team in Scotland currently, but that doesn’t mean “The Best” has lost its significance.

Having won nine consecutive league titles between 1989 and 1997, the Gers had every right to adopt Tina Turner’s song as one of their anthems.

The American singer, who sadly passed away in 2023, will always be remembered at Ibrox, and in 2010, fans in G51 got “The Best” into the top 10 of the UK singles chart to commemorate their 53rd league title.

However, Rangers definitely aren’t feeling the best under Martin, and it feels only a matter of time before the manager departs.

The Gers saw their Old Firm rivals match their 55-league-title tally, with Celtic lifting the William Hill Premiership in the 2024/25 season, and they have let their lead slip away in the overall bragging rights.

There will certainly be hope among the Ibrox faithful of being able to sing their anthems loud and proud with consistent silverware in the coming years under the ownership of the US consortium.
