Daniel Levy already set for surprise new role after playing part in Rangers takeover

Rangers used their links with Daniel Levy in the previous transfer window to sign Mikey Moore on loan from Tottenham.

The 18-year-old is considered one of the most exciting talents in the Premier League, and the Gers arguably pulled off a major coup, in part, potentially due to the former Spurs chief, who has stepped down from his role as executive chairman in N17.

There’s been a sea of change at the Light Blues in recent months, with Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises taking controlling shares at Ibrox.

Ambitions are running high at the Glaswegian outfit, with Kevin Thelwell confirming a £20million net spend under the US consortium, and there’s a possibility of further changes in the hierarchy.

49ers Enterprises want Daniel Levy in non-executive role after part in Rangers takeover

Levy acted as a brief consultant in Cavenagh and the 49ers’ takeover of the Gers, according to Luca Chianti.

The journalist who works for Reuters and AP revealed that the 63-year-old, who’s the Premier League’s longest-serving executive chairman after spending 24 years at Tottenham, is wanted by the 49ers.

If Levy does join Americans in a non-executive role, it wouldn’t be far-fetched to think he may also have some sort of say at Ibrox.

Chianti wrote on X on 4 September: “As discussed on the Pod last week, Daniel Levy is standing down from the position at Spurs, now breaking widely in the media. ENIC still maintains a dominant stake. Levy acted as a brief consultant in the 49ers takeover of Rangers, who are keen to bring him on board in a non-executive role.”

Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises may need more experience in boardroom

Cavenagh and the 49ers seem to be facing teething issues at Ibrox in the initial months since their takeover.

The US consortium, with the help of Thelwell, decided to appoint Russell Martin in the Gers’ dugout after Barry Ferguson’s departure.

The Scottish manager’s start to life at the Glaswegian outfit has been far from perfect, winning just three of his opening 11 games in charge.

Rangers may need to sack Martin already if things don’t change, and that will certainly represent a major setback for the new owners.

While the 49ers have some experience in football with their takeover of Leeds United in 2023, Cavenagh doesn’t, having worked in the US health insurance industry.

Levy’s know-how of the English top-flight may provide a voice in the American consortium that could potentially be transformative, but it remains to be seen how his situation unfolds.
