Barry Ferguson says Rangers have ‘major asset’ as Russell Martin sent clear demand

Rangers have made a terrible start to the season, having not won any of their opening four Scottish Premiership games.

Rangers were knocked out of the Champions League in emphatic fashion, losing 9-1 on aggregate to Club Brugge.

Calls for Russell Martin to be sacked continue, despite the manager spending big in the closing week of the transfer window.

More importantly, Martin has retained the services of a few players, including one Ibrox favourite.

Nico Raskin too important to be left out of the Rangers squad

Speaking on the Go Radio Football Show, former Rangers interim head coach Barry Ferguson spoke about Raskin’s quality.

He said: “If Martin and Raskin can sit down, and bang their heads together, Nico Raskin is a major asset to Rangers Football Club.”

“I’ve worked with him, I’ve seen what he can do and he’s a top midfielder who has got all the attributes.”

“When he is fit and training really well, Raskin is a big player for Rangers.”

Raskin joined Rangers in 2023, but was keen on leaving Ibrox this summer, which led to reports surfacing of a disagreement between Raskin and Martin.

Crystal Palace and Wolves were interested in Raskin, but ultimately no transfer away from G51 could be agreed for the 24-year-old.

They were among a host of clubs that were interested in signing the Belgium international.

With his speculation around his future being squashed for now, it will rise again during the January transfer window.

Raskin stuck on the bench for Belgium

Raskin is a perfect fit for Belgium’s system, as the Red Devils’ midfield continues to age.

Raskin has made four caps for his country, performing well and prompting the Belgium press to highlight the fact that he should be starting.

However, Raskin’s antics at Rangers over the summer have contributed to him being an unused substitute in Belgium’s 6-0 win over Liechtenstein.

The ever-dependable Youri Tielemans was preferred in the no. 6 role, yet it is clear that Raskin has the qualities to grab that starting spot.

With a busy few months ahead at Rangers, Raskin will be hoping to rediscover the form that got him playing for his country.
