Russell Martin given show of faith by 49ers amid late Ibrox exit development

Rangers conducted a lot of business in the transfer window, with many developments coming late on deadline day.

Rangers are winless in the Scottish Premiership after drawing 0-0 with Celtic, and faced a rush to seal all of their signings and finalise their outgoings before the deadline on 1 September.

Youssef Chermiti’s £8m move from Everton was the biggest deal of the day, as Russell Martin completely rebuilds the club’s attack.

Cyriel Dessers left Ibrox and Derek Cornelius signed for Rangers at the last hour, but the Gers also had to turn down a loan deal for one of their key midfielders.

Connor Barron remains at Rangers despite Bologna interest

Rangers turned down Bologna’s approach for Connor Barron late on deadline day.

Bologna were prepared to pay a “significant fee” for Barron, but their interest was swiftly turned down by Rangers.

As per the Daily Record, Martin is said to be a fan of Barron and made it clear that the 23-year-old midfielder is a firm part of his plans.

Barron has only started one game this season, Rangers’ 0-0 draw with Celtic, and despite the fact that he hasn’t scored a goal for the club yet, the tenacious midfielder has been a solid addition.

With Martin having so much influence over the players he chooses to have faith in, it is hard to imagine a world where the 49ers would sack him in the near future.

Rangers have made 14 signings this summer, so the notion that Paraag Marathe will sack Martin in the next two weeks is frankly ridiculous.

However, despite the fact that a sacking at this stage of the season feels so unlikely, Martin’s next four games in charge could have a huge bearing on his future, as he does have very little credit in the back.

Russell Martin faces uncertain future

Martin is already under immense pressure at Rangers, and if results don’t change soon, Marathe will have no choice but to dismiss him.

Rangers are not only winless in the Scottish Premiership, but they were also embarrassingly knocked out of the Champions League play-off round, losing 9-1 on aggregate to Club Brugge.

With Rangers missing out on some much-needed Champions League money, Martin has to turn results around quickly, otherwise more and more fans will be calling for his sacking.
