Aaron Ramsey and Newcastle trio – Rangers’ biggest deadline day shockers

Rangers have had some woeful deadline day transfers in the past, and some of these mistakes cannot be repeated ever again.

While Rangers have also tasted success with some deadline-day arrivals, there have been some disastrous signings in the past made in the final hours of the transfer window.

Ibrox has seen some world-class talents as well as those on the opposite end of the spectrum, and it really has been a mixed bag in the transfer market for Rangers this century.

Rangers have not shied away from bringing in last-minute recruits on deadline day, but they came to regret some of them, and Ibrox News have now listed the worst.

Aaron Ramsey cost Rangers the Europa League

Rangers pulled off a coup in January 2022 as they signed Juventus midfielder Aaron Ramsey on loan on transfer deadline day.

The former Arsenal midfielder was one of the biggest names to ever grace Scottish football as he unexpectedly arrived at Ibrox, but he could not live up to his reputation.

Ramsey was injured for most of his time at Rangers, but came off the bench in the Europa League final, and missed the decisive penalty against Frankfurt, a moment which will never be forgotten for all the wrong reasons.

Newcastle trio barely touched the pitch

In 2014-15, Rangers were competing in the second division and experienced turmoil under Mike Ashley, before eventually failing to seal promotion back to the Scottish Premiership.

Ashley also owned Newcastle at the time, and deadline day in the winter window saw him shove five players into Rangers’ faces, with some not even completing a medical.

While Haris Vuckic proved to be a great addition, and Shane Ferguson played just two games, the rest were barely seen.

Remi Streete lasted 43 minutes on his debut before picking up an injury, and he was never seen again.

Two talented youngsters in Kevin Mbabu and Gael Bigirimana, were part of the five, but neither of them even appeared once, and this summed up the chaos that was Ashley’s reign in charge of Rangers.

Nedim Bajrami has failed to impress at Rangers

Nedim Bajrami joined on deadline day in 2024, but despite flashes of occasional brilliance, the Albanian failed to impress on a consistent basis.

Rangers never worked out what Bajrami’s best position was, but despite his ultimate failure at Ibrox, he was not even the worst deadline day signing to arrive on that day.

Neraysho Kasanwirjo failed to make any impact

Neraysho Kasanwirjo joined on loan from Feyenoord on the same day as Bajrami, but this was a very forgettable transfer.

The 23-year-old made just 15 appearances for Rangers, and the defender could not nail down a starting place despite the other options in his position also failing to impress.

Kasanwirjo then picked up a serious knee injury, and his last appearance came in November 2024, a good eight months before his loan deal ended.
