Russell Martin is ‘done’ at Rangers with Ibrox future now ‘written in the runes’

Russell Martin may be powerless to stop himself from losing his job at Rangers after a dismal start to the season.

The Gers are without a win in their first three Premiership outings, an opening run that constitutes their worst start to a league season in 36 years

Things were going slightly better for Martin and Rangers in the Champions League, until the recent 9-1 aggregate embarrassment at the hands of Club Brugge saw them fall at the final hurdle in qualifying.

The Ibrox outfit are firmly stuck in a rut, and even a win in Sunday’s Old Firm Derby may not be enough to save the 39-year-old.

‘Indescribably bad’ Rangers to sack Martin regardless of derby result

Martin’s future at Rangers has fallen closely under the microscope in the last few weeks, as a string of poor results and performances has seemingly left him teetering on the brink of losing his job.

The clash with Celtic simply could not have come at a worse time for the Govan outfit, who have seemed to lurch from one crisis to another of late.

Pressure is constantly mounting on Martin, whose football has done little to endear himself to the fans since arriving at the club.

The Gers already find themselves six points behind their bitter rivals after just three games of the league season, amid a disastrous start.

Gary Keown now believes that the former Southampton boss is in a position where he will lose his job regardless of the outcome of Sunday’s crucial derby.

“The party’s over for Martin,” he wrote in the Scottish Mail on Sunday on 31 August (pg. 94).

“The only way to restore harmony and energy at Ibrox and turn it back into a place of love is to boot the self-proclaimed weirdo parroting all this garbage out the door ASAP.

“His future is already written in the runes. Rangers are so indescribably bad under his guidance that nothing that happens in the first Old Firm game of the season is going to change things.

“There’s no point even chewing the cud over it. He’s done.”

49ers have to admit their mistake

The 49ers have handed Martin plenty of backing in the transfer market this summer, and he can certainly have no complaints about the investment that he has received in the squad.

However, he has failed to make good use of that and has surely now presented the board and the owners with a serious decision to make.

It was a brave appointment to hand Martin the reins in the first place, but the 49ers are now surely better served to admit their mistake and dismiss him, rather than stick with a setup that clearly isn’t working.

They still have the chance to salvage something from the season if they make the decision now, but if they let this debacle go on for much longer, then Rangers’ entire campaign could be written off in the blink of an eye.
