Rangers’ best-ever deadline day signings: Barry Ferguson and 20/21 title winner

Rangers fans have seen some legends like Barry Ferguson come through the doors at Ibrox on transfer deadline day.

The Gers have made multiple additions to their team so far this summer, and Kevin Thelwell deserves praise for signing Djeidi Gassama.

There have also been some significant outgoings from the Light Blues, too, with LOSC Lille completing a deal for Hamza Igamane.

In the past, the Glaswegian outfit have used the final hours of the transfer window to pull off some exceptional deals, and Ibrox News has a look at a few of them ahead of Monday’s cut-off point.

Barry Ferguson — Blackburn Rovers to Rangers

On 31 January 2005, Ferguson returned to the Gers from Blackburn Rovers in a deal worth £4.5million.

The former Scotland international had already made a name for himself at Ibrox in his first spell, and returned to captain the Light Blues back to success.

Upon the ex-midfielder’s return in 2005, the Glaswegian outfit won two league titles, two Scottish Cups and two Scottish League Cups before he moved to Birmingham City in 2009.

Glen Kamara — Dundee to Rangers

Having initially signed a pre-contract with the Gers, Glen Kamara’s move to Ibrox was made permanent on 31 January 2019 for a £50,000 fee to Dundee.

The 29-year-old went on to play a key role in the Light Blues’ return to success, playing an influential role in ending the 10-year league trophy drought in 2021.

During the Glaswegian outfit’s run to the Europa League final in 2022, the Finland international scored in the semi-final against RB Leipzig, as the Bears won 3-2 on aggregate.

Sasa Papac — Austria Vienna to Rangers

On 31 August 2006, Rangers signed Sasa Papac from Austria Vienna for a reasonable £450,000.

The former left-back spent six glorious years at the Gers, playing in the 2008 UEFA Cup final.

The ex-Bosnia international won three league titles, two Scottish League Cups and one Scottish Cup before eventually retiring in 2012.

Steven Naismith — Kilmarnock to Rangers

On 31 August 2007, Steven Naismith made his way to Ibrox from Kilmarnock in a deal worth £1.9m.

The ex-Scotland international started the 2011/12 season on fire, scoring nine league goals in 11 matches, before unfortunately suffering an ACL injury in October 2011.

In 2012, the former attacker eventually signed for Everton, but it wasn’t before winning three league titles with the Glaswegian outfit.

Steven Davis — Fulham to Rangers

Steven Davies initially joined the Gers on loan from Fulham on 31 January 2008, before the move was made permanent the following summer.

The Northern Irishman’s first stint at the Light Blues lasted until 2012, with the midfield maestro pulling the strings in the middle of the park at Ibrox.

After an impressive stint at Southampton, the 40-year-old returned on loan to the Glaswegian outfit in January 2019, winning four league titles during his two spells in G51.
