Kasper Schmeichel ‘got away with murder’ after Rangers vs Celtic incident at Ibrox

Rangers are playing Celtic in the first Old Firm Derby of the season and there has already been a moment of controversy.

The Gers have had a nightmare start to the Premiership campaign, and the derby has come around at a less-than-opportune moment for them.

Russell Martin is under huge pressure at Rangers just weeks into his stint at the helm, and Sunday’s result could potentially play a crucial role in deciding his fate.

The clash is one of the most important of the entire campaign, and it hasn’t taken long at all for a major talking point to arise.

Kasper Schmeichel ‘lucky’ with disallowed Rangers goal

Rangers’ clash with Celtic sees them go in search of their first win of the season in the league, after their worst opening to a new domestic campaign in 36 years.

The Govan outfit have had a disastrous start in 2025/26, but they thought they had hit the front midway through the first half at Ibrox, when John Souttar headed home from a deep free-kick from James Tavernier.

Celtic goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel came flying out of goal and completely missed the ball, allowing Souttar to climb highest and nod into the unguarded net.

However, Rangers’ joy was short-lived, as VAR intervened and ruled the goal out for a marginal offside call.

The decision served to spare the blushes of Schmeichel, who was lucky to escape without his team being punished for his moment of madness.

Former Hibernian star and pundit Tam McManus took to his X account to express his feelings on Schmeichel’s fortune.

He wrote: “Schmeichel got away with murder there. Lucky.”

Russell Martin desperately needs to win Old Firm clash

Martin’s situation at Rangers looks grave, and many feared that a heavy defeat could be on the cards in the Old Firm Clash with the 39-year-old in charge.

It goes without saying that he needs a positive result if he is to begin to work towards regaining the trust of the Gers faithful, as there is no more stinging defeat than one to your bitter rivals.

With the game 0-0 at half-time, his side have a crucial foothold, and they simply cannot afford to let that slip in the second period, or it could spell the end for the boss.
