What Jose Mourinho privately did to Barry Ferguson at Ibrox suggests Rangers job is in his sights

Jose Mourinho could be in line to become the next Rangers manager.

Mourinho was tentatively linked with Rangers when the 49ers and Andrew Cavenagh assessed options to take the Ibrox club forward earlier this year.

The US consortium eventually opted to hire Russell Martin, but after Rangers lost 6-0 to Club Brugge on Wednesday, huge questions over his future have been raised.

The ex-Southampton manager’s job prospects haven’t been helped after Mourinho was sacked by Fenerbahce, leaving him potentially open to a Govan move.

This appears to be the case after what happened when Rangers faced Fenerbahce in the Europa League back in March, and he spoke to Barry Ferguson.

Jose Mourinho Ibrox activity points to Rangers dream

There is no getting away from the fact that the Gers are in a bad place right now, with Martin potentially set to face the sack at Rangers.

With a seat potentially to become available in the Ibrox dugout, there is every chance that the three-time Premier League champion could come in.

The Portuguese head coach has become subject to huge links to the Light Blues after his time in Turkyie came to an abrupt end on Friday (29 August).

With that being said, the behaviour of the 55-year-old when he visited Ibrox has to be evidence of a Govan dream for the former Chelsea boss.

This comes after Derek Ferguson revealed that when Mourinho faced Rangers, he came to the home dressing room to speak to interim Light Blues boss, Ferguson.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News in March, the former Gers star revealed: “What he did at full-time and his comments, I think he recognises that Rangers are a big club. And you know what, he might just fancy it.

“He came down to congratulate Barry [Ferguson] in the home dressing room. He might have done that to suss it out. He’s Box Office.”

Jose Mourinho would represent massive coup for Rangers

It is fair to say that the Bears faithful have already grown frustrated with the former Swansea City boss after just 10 matches in charge.

This comes after a faltering start in the Scottish Premiership before being destroyed by Club Brugge in the final Champions League qualifier in mid-week.

Russell Martin has a patchy record at Rangers already

With an Old Firm clash coming up, defeat would leave the Gers nine points behind the Hoops, leaving the league title race already out of Rangers’ grasp.

A loss against Brendan Rodgers’ side could leave the door open for Mourinho to come in and showcase his managerial talents in Scotland.

It could prove to be a match made in heaven for the G51 club, with the former Real Madrid boss still representing a real coup for the Gers and the Premiership, if he were to come in.
