Simon Jordan passionately defends Russell Martin after Rangers humiliation vs Club Brugge

Russell Martin’s spell as Rangers manager has been chaotic so far.

Gers are yet to win a game in the league under Martin, with the Light Blues sitting on three points from their opening three matches.

Martin’s men were thrown out of the Champions League on Wednesday as Rangers lost 6-0 to Club Brugge in the second leg of their playoff tie, with the aggregate scoreline being 9-1 in favour of the Belgian outfit.

As the pressure ramps up on Martin regarding his Ibrox future, Simon Jordan had his say on the former Swansea and Southampton manager.

Simon Jordan defends Russell Martin’s position as Rangers boss

Jordan has previously defended Martin following his tough start in Glasgow, claiming Martin needed more time to settle into his new job.

Despite their 6-0 humiliation in midweek, Jordan’s stance on Martin does not seem to have changed much, feeling the manager still needs more time despite the outside pressure from the fanbase.

Speaking on talkSPORT on 28 August, Jordan had this to say about Martin amid his disappointing results in charge in G51.

“I think the ownership have got to be steady in its thinking, because the background noise is the background noise… It’s not their job to back down to the mob.”

The former Crystal Palace owner continued: “It’s their job to do what’s right for the football club, and what’s right right now may well be that Russell Martin isn’t fit for the purpose, but only they know that.

“I know that the results are not great, I know that getting a 6-0 tonking is an appalling outcome.

“He’s trying to change the style of play, he’s trying to get the players to adopt to it. It cannot be achieved in ten games. It cannot be.

“If we’ve really reached a point, really honestly reached a point where a man that’s going into a football club does not get more than ten games, then people are foolish, and the 49ers know what they employed him for and can still see it,” Jordan said.

Martin’s record in charge after ten games at Rangers:

Sacking Russell Martin would be disastrous for Rangers

Despite his record as manager being appalling, and the performances being equally as concerning, the 49ers have effectively backed themselves into a corner when it comes to Martin.

With Bojan Miovski set to be the latest signing for Rangers, Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises cannot risk sacking Martin so early after this mass influx of new players.

If a new manager were to arrive in Glasgow and not fancy one of the many signings that have already been made, presumably with some approval from Martin, then that player would effectively be a waste of money already.

However, despite all of this logic, the manager has to show at least some signs of improvement, with the defending from Rangers at times this season being nothing short of comical.

With the Old Firm against Celtic set to take place at Ibrox on Sunday, another heavy defeat may make Martin’s position as manager untenable before we have even got into September.
